It was just a hard hit ball and that’s all that stat means. It has nothing  to do with the placement of the ball, where the fielder are, etc(see the ball Bregman just caught)….he got there in plenty of time and just had to jump a little. I would expect any OFer to make that catch.

Now of course he hasn’t played OF much in the last few years, so it’s more impressive and shows why he’s such a great athlete but the catch itself wasn’t that special.

I think that expected batting average is lot more relevant on flyballs in the outfield than it is on liners in the infield.  I agree that on liners in the infield it's a lot of luck.  UZR doesn't even count liners that are caught by infielders IIRC.

That’s great. But even still, he has a lower-body injury, so the the backup at such a crucial position matters. I don’t think Hyde would trust Cowser or McKenna there in October. Same with SS, if Gunnar goes down as he did just a few weeks ago, he doesn’t want Jordan Westburt playing SS in the ALCS.
