Hitting approach

The last few games got me thinking about BB:K ratio of the hitters.  The O's are 15th out of 30 in BB:K ratio at .38 (or 1 BB for every 2.67 K).  To break the components down, on the season we're about league average taking a walk (471 total vs 488 avg).  Slightly better limiting striking out to 1256 times on the season vs 1292 avg.  1 BB for every 2.67 Ks.  For comparison, 2022 was 476 BB to 1390 K (1 for every 2.92).  2021 was 451 BB to 1454 K (1 for every 3.22).

March/April - 109 BB to 222 K - 1 BB for every 2 Ks. (the early Gunnar PAs)

May - 94 to 233 - 1 for every 2.48

June - 64 to 204 - 1 for every 3.19

July - 74 to 231 - 1 for every 3.12

Aug - 74 to 213 - 1 for every 2.88

Sept - 56 to 153 - 1 for every 2.73

Back to what got me thinking about this...  The last few games got me thinking about BB:K ratio of the hitters.  Definitely cherry-picking some SSS here, so take it with a heavy grain of salt.  But the last few games (vs TB and HOU), that ratio is been terrible.  7 BB to 61 K or a 0.11 BB:K (1 for every 8.71).  For perspective of how bad that is, the worst BB:K ratio as a team is the CHW with a 0.26.  At least our "contact to damage" ratio is strong the last few days!

Adley had a nice 10:1-ish streak in August to get close to even for the year. Ump last night didn't help though. Sometimes these things are a function of the pitcher. Tampa and HOU haven't been giving us much to work with. Eflin and Verlander in particular were just pounding the zone. Santander had a nice 10 pitch AB ending in a K on a really good pitch, albeit one that was out of the zone.
