I was 17 - loved that team. I was heartbroken when they lost the WS in 79' to the Pirates after being up 3-1.

I was 7 in 1979...  My family align with Redskins/Orioles, so Fall/winter 79 provided me with  my first important lessons in sports and heartbreak. In addition to the 79 Series ending, that was also the year the Skins lost 35-34 to the Cowboys in the last game of the season to get knocked out of the playoffs.

I'm going to be pissed off if the Orioles win tomorrow night.

They have EARNED  this celebration, if they aren't so hungover they can barely see the ball straight tomorrow, they ain't doing it right.

It would be sort of like the legends of blind or drunk swordsmen who can cut down an encircling horde anyway....

Interesting that ESPN has us as clinched best league record but not the division

Isn't winning the division implied when you have clinched the best record in the league? There's no way to have a better record than all the other teams and not win your Division.

The Braves have exactly the same asterisk.

Does anyone know if the games on the network channels be streamed later, ie. after they are over on MLB-TV? If they were principally on MLB-TV, that's the usual thing and I can start a game late. Like an idiot, I booked 3 gigs I can't get out of back in spring when I thought I'd be able to steer clear of some. But I will miss games on the 8th (possibly) and definitely the 7th and 13th due to playing with the band.

I know I could watch regular Fox and Apple exclusives on MLB-TV after those games were over.

Apparently they did it right.

    • The 1997 Orioles started 50-23 (111 win pace) and finished 98-64. It's rare for a team to stay this hot for all 162 games.
    • Elias sounded like he’s interested in figuring out a way to retain Means: “This is not career-ending. We're going to get him back in good shape. But this surgery takes time." Means, 31, is a free agent after the season, further clouding his future in Baltimore and in baseball. He signed a two-year, $5.925 million contract in May 2022 and avoided arbitration in January by agreeing to a $3.325 million deal. "I think the first step is taking care of this and we're going to support him and we have a long relationship and he's a special member of this organization, just given everything that he's done," Elias said. "Obviously, we talk a lot, so I'm sure we'll be dialoging with him as we get him back on his feet medically. He's going to make it back. He's a big, strong guy, and once he gets this elbow injury fully behind him - which hasn't really been the case, it seems like, going back into last year - I think he's got a lot of really good pitching ahead of him." https://www.masnsports.com/blog/means-and-wells-undergoing-elbow-surgery
    • It's the Yankees. It's pride, regardless of anything else.
    • To be honest, it depends on whether the division would be a step down, a step up, or expected. In 2022, everyone would have been overjoyed at 3WC. In 2023, we would have been furious. Now expectations are high. A WC is still playoffs but a huge disappointment. Not just considering the importance of a first round bye and R&R for the guys, anything less than a division title is a disappointment.  The division is the goal of the season. And I hate the Yankees. And I’m annoyed every time we lose a game we should have won.
    • Bummer that it's a full TJ, which is a longer recovery than the brace. Hope it works out for him. It sucks, he only got 44.1 major league innings out of his first surgery. Maybe the fact that they were very good innings helps make sure someone takes a chance on him.  It'll be almost 5 years post no-hitter by the time he can take a big league mound again.
    • I think the O's should consider matching and upping what other teams might be offering.  It might only be a minor league deal.  Even if the prognosis is really good I doubt the O's do anything like a qualifying offer, but bringing him back on a small deal makes sense.
    • Are they better than the 2022 Yankees?  That team had a better record at this point in the season than this year’s Yankees.   The ‘22 team did win the division, but only won 99 games after starting 49-16.  They went 50-47 after their crazy hot start.  Teams don’t defy gravity forever.
