This lack of velocity is what shut him down last year after trying to start back up. Tate does not have the stuff to get away with a 90.4 MPH fastball. If that doesn't come back, and it would be surprising if it did at this point, he'll be back in Norfolk before May.

Yeah, the Stuff+ numbers from yesterday are on Fangraphs now and his sinker was at 74. Horrible. I’m surprised the Orioles even put him on the Opening Day roster if this has been his velo all spring, I’d think at least Baker should be ahead of Tate until Tate shows his velo is back (or at least that he shows he can be effective against AAA hitters at this velo).

I think Tate is going to be the first one to AAA for a fresh arm, not Akin.

Not sure about "stuff" but I saw a lot of movement on his pitches... more than he could command. In this respect the outing was quite reminiscent of Ubaldo. Where you want to say, just aim for the middle of the plate and see what happens.

100%. Akin looks great to me and as long as that's the case, you ride him.

We'll have Webb back in 3 days max, so I'm sort of curious if they option Vespi or Tate. I'll lean Vespi for now since that's his role, but at this rate it won't be long before we see Baker, Ort, Heasley, or Krook.

He looked better in his second outing. IP H BB 2K. Struck out Witt. Tate was only 92-93, but so were Kimbrel, Cano, Webb, and Heasley. I’ll chalk up the low velo so far to it being cold and rainy. Only Baumann and Burnes on OD have really lit up the gun.

Honestly, I’m much more concerned about Tate than Akin.

91.7 mph avg velocity on the sinker. 11.4% K rate. 11.4% BB rate. 91.8 mph exit velocity. 53.8% hard hit rate. 9.8% whiff rate. 14.5% chase rate. 3.8% swinging strike rate.

4.50 ERA. 5.70 FIP. 5.49 xFIP. 5.06 SIERRA.  6.30 xERA. 84 stuff+ on sinker. 88 location+ on sinker.

The ground ball rate is still good, but I’m not sure that’s going to be enough to save him.

Yeah I was hopeful for him but after seeing last night (where it all caught up to him) I just don't think he has the stuff any more. He used to have an excellent 2 seamer with good velocity and arm side run but that doesn't seem to exist anymore with the velocity drop.
