Who said anything about a knife? It doesn't have to be Tommy John to be an injury that might be impacting his command (see Kimbrel, Craig). Learning that a sore back or ankle is bothering him would be a better explanation than him just suddenly walking over a batter an inning because the competition got tougher. That wouldn't bode well at all for his future success.

No injury is good.  Sometimes players just fail.  That's why there is a minor leagues and a developmental path.  Rooting for an injury should never be an answer.  The simple answer is likely that he only has thrown 252 IP in his entire pro career, and he's now pitching against the best talent he's ever faced.  Baseball is hard.

He's going to have to adjust, but an injury to be the easy solution is a terrible outcome.

I don't see how revealing that he has a sore back, resting him for a couple of weeks, then him coming back showing better command is a terrible outcome.

Perfect thru 6 complete with 11 K's.

7th inning lead-off BB, retires next 2 then another BB.  Pulled with 96 total pitches, and Hoffman gets out of the jam.

6.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K's

FB was very live tonight.

Normal.  Heat helps blood flow.

He didn't finish last season due to back issues and he's been dealing with it since his last ST outing.

A few starts ago he kept stretching his back out between pitches/outs.

It’s funny…feels like he’s had a bad yea but the ERA is under 3.  Obviously he has had some troubling peripherals and poor command and control at times though.

Great start tonight. Str% about 64%.

Good to know.  Maybe that explains some of his command issues prior to tonight’s game.

For all the ups and downs he’s had this year, he has a 2.89 ERA in a league where the average ERA is 4.95.   Hopefully tonight is a bellwether for how the rest of his season will go.  He needed an outing like this.

Great start.  First 6 innings were beautiful.   Sounds like he might have been dealing with some minor back issues.  Hopefully, they can keep that under control, and the warmer weather should help.  Let’s see if he can string a few together.

    • I saw that swing at the game yesterday. Told my son he just missed it and didn’t get all of it. Then it kept carrying. Heston has big time power.
    • Great to see. He can be an important player for us. I hope we can catch him on a heater heading into the playoffs. The last calendar year the heater months have been the outliers.
    • Yep, we're mostly in agreement here. Bud Selig was (is?) a slimy guy. Made fistfuls of cash in the 1990s attendance boom, then was shocked, just **shocked**, that anything unusual was going on.
    • I remember seeing him in that age 20 season and thinking he was Christ in cleats.  Wanted to really like that guy but he made it impossible. Hell of a player. I don’t care about the PEDs like I used to but he was amazing without the juice.
    • Yep.  All of it was part of MLB’s decision that scoring runs was more important and would bring more people, so they overlooked things and “helped the players cheat” in different ways and then they turn around and vilify the players because it tarnishes their precious records…records held by players who also took PEDs. The whole thing is a joke.
    • Santander has an OPS+ of 128 and a wRC+ of 125. In other words, at or near his career peak, and better than Cal or Brooks' career marks. A 128 OPS+ would be Nick Markakis' second-best offensive season. MLB overall batting average this year is .242, 5th-lowest of all time. League OBP of .311 is in the bottom 15% since 1900. And while slugging will probably inch up through the summer, the current mark of .393 is lower than any season since 1992. My guess is that they juice the ball next year, since the shift ban hasn't really had much of an overall effect. Even if it's revived a few careers like Ryan O'Hearn's.
    • Just as importantly they used baseballs where they'd replaced the cushioned cork center with Flubber. There's almost no way that sometime in early 1993 the entire league suddenly decided to use industrial quantities of 'roids AND started to work out like madmen so they'd take effect. In 1992 the majors scored just over four runs a game, and by mid-1993 it was about five. Not to rehash that entire argument for the 10,000th time...
