Who said anything about a knife? It doesn't have to be Tommy John to be an injury that might be impacting his command (see Kimbrel, Craig). Learning that a sore back or ankle is bothering him would be a better explanation than him just suddenly walking over a batter an inning because the competition got tougher. That wouldn't bode well at all for his future success.

No injury is good.  Sometimes players just fail.  That's why there is a minor leagues and a developmental path.  Rooting for an injury should never be an answer.  The simple answer is likely that he only has thrown 252 IP in his entire pro career, and he's now pitching against the best talent he's ever faced.  Baseball is hard.

He's going to have to adjust, but an injury to be the easy solution is a terrible outcome.

I don't see how revealing that he has a sore back, resting him for a couple of weeks, then him coming back showing better command is a terrible outcome.

Perfect thru 6 complete with 11 K's.

7th inning lead-off BB, retires next 2 then another BB.  Pulled with 96 total pitches, and Hoffman gets out of the jam.

6.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K's

FB was very live tonight.

Normal.  Heat helps blood flow.

He didn't finish last season due to back issues and he's been dealing with it since his last ST outing.

A few starts ago he kept stretching his back out between pitches/outs.

It’s funny…feels like he’s had a bad yea but the ERA is under 3.  Obviously he has had some troubling peripherals and poor command and control at times though.

Great start tonight. Str% about 64%.

Good to know.  Maybe that explains some of his command issues prior to tonight’s game.

For all the ups and downs he’s had this year, he has a 2.89 ERA in a league where the average ERA is 4.95.   Hopefully tonight is a bellwether for how the rest of his season will go.  He needed an outing like this.

Great start.  First 6 innings were beautiful.   Sounds like he might have been dealing with some minor back issues.  Hopefully, they can keep that under control, and the warmer weather should help.  Let’s see if he can string a few together.
