Bullpen

It's very frustrating to me the way Hyde uses the bullpen. I see other teams use some of their relievers for more than a single inning all the time. Akin throws 8 pitches to easily retire the side in the 8th inning but he can't come back out for the 9th inning???  Last year this strategy of only one inning at a time frequently cost the bullpen in having fresh options available. If a guy is on a roll like Akin clearly was keep him in!

Same as last game, Connor Joe hits LHP well and Akin has poor splits. Hyde put Cano in perfect position to win and he pitched like crap. Hyde managed it beautifully IMO.

Oh, to have a time machine so you could tell OH last summer - or even two weeks ago - that someone was going to start a thread complaining that Keegan Akin was removed from a ballgame for a rested Yennier Cano in a save situation.

Heat as in he messed up. Our bullpen is essentially where it was pre Fuji/Webb. With Kimbrel replacing Bautista. Elias didn’t think there would be a drop off?

He could’ve gotten a RHP for prospects. Not that it fixes Cano today. Cano has to perform. But longterm that is where we are. We’re pre pre Fuji/Webb/Bautista injury.

This is not just about today. It is the philosophy not keeping a pitcher in a game when he is throwing very well. As for Cano, he has already pitched in 5 games this year and the rock is no MOUNTAIN! I would be saying the same thing if Cano threw 8 pitches and looked dominant in the eighth inning since Kimbrel was not available.

Maybe the Mets will trade us and his 99 mph sinker?

We scored 2 runs.

Half the lineup looks lost at the plate.

You put the pen in high leverage situations every game and bad things happen.

This is correct. It would be nice if we had more real ML hitters in the batting order like Pittsburg does.

Yes. We are currently where we were before the Fuji trade. Aka needing a RH SU man. Not to mention the drop of from Kimbrel to Bautista in extra innings.

Elias obviously didn’t have payroll bucks to add to the pen. So he should’ve spent prospect bucks for relievers instead of leaving them in AAA for no Value.

We could’ve gotten a reliever for some combo of Kjerstad/Norby/Stowers.

Elias messed up. To be family friendly.

    • It can’t hurt to do research on him and place a call to Cards GM & see what’s involved . We need SP help .
    • Here is my roster. Wasn't an easy task with some tough decisions C  Adley Rutschmann 2022 1B Rafaeil Palmeiro 1998 2B Brian Roberts 2009 SS Miguel Tejada 2006 3B Manny Machado 2015 OF Adam Jones 2015 OF Albert Belle 1999 OF Trey Mancini 2017 DH Chris Davis 2013          Bench Gunnar Henderson 2024 Bench Melvin Mora 2004 Bench Jay Gibbons 2003 Bench Matt Wieters 2011 --------------------- SP Mike Mussina 2000 SP Jason Johnson 2001 SP Wei-Yen Chen    2014 SP Erik Bedard 2007 SP John Means 2019          RP Jorge Julio 2002 RP BJ Ryan 2005 RP Jim Johnson 2012 RP Koji Uehara    2010 RP Zack Britton    2016 RP Felix Bautista 2023 RP Darren O'Day    2014 RP George Sherril 2008
    • You must choose a 26-man roster from 26 seasons. Here are the rules. Ignore 2020 Select 13 position players, with 9 starters and 4 bench players Select 13 pitchers, with 5 starters and 8 relievers You can only select one player from each season from 1998-2024 (exclude 2020) You can only select a given player ONCE  Starting pitchers have to be starting pitchers, relievers have to be relievers I will amend rules as appropriate from any suggestions you have. Go.
    • Now being reported on MLB Network in middle of Braves-Mets postgame wrapup.
    • Adley's teams have beaten Witt's teams by about 25 games/season the last 2 years and hopefully can maintain a lead the next 2-3 days. If McCann bats 9th, and Ragans is gone before Batter Faced #27, would the risk of forfeiting the DH be considered if a righty reliever is attacking McCann in a key spot?    Hyde has at least Kjerstad and Holliday on the bench, and maybe one of Mullins or Cowser if Slater starts. I am guessing the roster tomorrow will be 14 bats and 12 arms, so you might have one extra somebody for the team's 36th or 45th plate appearance. One factor against taking the chance...zombie runner is gone so the two teams could have long extra innings for the first time all year.
    • Not sure if it’s been shared already, but saw this and thought he would totally make sense as someone to target in the offseason. Cardinals are looking to reduce payroll, though not sure what a reasonable offer looks like for a 35 year old pitcher making 25 million a year for the next two years. A very light free agent class this year. Someone will definitely overpay for Burnes and I hope it’s not the Orioles. Severino, Buehler, Bieber and Max Fried are also intriguing. What say you? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/09/report-cardinals-open-to-offers-on-sonny-gray.html
    • I was looking that up too. He was in the bullpen throughout 2018 brewers run. Had a very solid first playoff start in 2021, then a not so good one in 2023 as you posted. Postseason is a different animal, and he’s got some experience, but he’s not proven in the playoffs. Time to make that money Corbin!
