The 2024 Trade Deadline

I was thinking more Efflin and bullpen help. Bradley would be interesting too but would cost a lot.

Adams & Armstrong are the 2 Tampa guys to target. Mid 30s relievers shouldn’t cost a ton.

I don't think we really need to trade for CF just because we have so much depth at COF. We could promote Mayo or Kjerstad permanently and just see how they shake out, which wouldn't offensively be as bad as Mullins has been this year. Slide over Cowser to CF if we can't find that good a deal, and then go for anothter SP arm and some more depth in the pen. They don't trade Basallo because (and this is just me speculating) that they could move on from either Mountcastle or O'Hearn in the 2025-2026 offseason depending on if they can get a good return on them, like what we saw Tampa do with Austin Meadows a couple years back and the Orioles have a backup to replace said bat or bats.

In terms of who we go for, I don't really know. I don't like the idea of reuniting with Tanner Scott because his control issues and walk rate are still very present. I'm not in love with the idea of going for Kopech because the numbers and peripherals are average at best.  Carlos Estavez from the Angels, sure but how high is that asking price going to be? Whoever sells come deadline time could be interesting, as teams like the Cubs and Tigers could potentially be sellers come deadline time. Maybe even the mighty Astros who haven't been as good this year could be persuaded to sell off some talent depending on who we make available. It's a little to early to tell as of right now due to a good chunk of the sport sitting at around 500, but who knows at this point?

Ellis said recently that Tampa was not going to trade Glasnow inside the division  last winter.    I don't know that would change for their current  players.

A player who is a FA after this year TB is not going to care where he goes. That said they only have Armstrong and Rosario. Potentially Maton.

I really think they have their eyes on Basallo as not only an huge impact player for the team, but also as the face of the new Latin program for many years moving forward.  As in using him as a recruitment tool, a shining example of what signing with the Os can mean, etc. Latin America was an early stated goal and I think ME sees it as the absolute key to longer term success. And I think he sees Basallo as the face of that end of the operation for the next 15 years or more.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if Basallo was the first player meaningfully extended.

This ……100000%

There’s no way Elias is giving up Basallo for a player like Luis Robert, Garrett Crochet or Mason Miller. It would have to be a bigger name than those three players.

What bigger name is available than those 3?

That would be very surprising to me and potentially very damaging to the brand and business. How often have you been the Camden Yards this season? Have you seen all of the #2 and #35 shirts in the stands?

To allow those two multi-Allstars and potentially more (who have actually done it on the field) to walk for the sake of promoting something that is symbolic would be a disaster.

Where did I suggest letting 2 and 35 walk?  I said first, not only.

I think the idea is that if Basallo is first it would mean it would already be too late to extend the other two.

What's the earliest you would extend Basallo?

I’m not the one posting these rumors. I don’t see Elias trading Basallo because no player worth that price is getting traded before August 1st.

It’s clickbait and it’s working since we’re discussing it on OH.

It’s in the realm of possibility that he becomes the Os first example of an extension pre or right after call up. That theoretically could be as early as next year, or two years at most. That doesn’t close the door on the others.

Then I’m not sure what you are talking about.

This is #35’s third season and second all-star apparently. He has also won a silver slugger.

This is #2’s second season and he will be an all-star and possible MVP. Along with the fact that he has won a silver slugger. AND he has Boras for an agent.

So it seems to me that it’s probably about now or never for extending both. Rutschman will be in his FOURTH season next year.

Basallo is in AA. How in the world do those timelines work to you? Where you extend Basallo first and then are able to come back and the do Henderson and Rutchsman (the much more accomplished players who have led you to the playoffs). I’m confused..

    • They also haven’t announced the times, yet.
    • Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.
    • You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.
    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
