Heston Kjerstad 2024

Recommended Posts

Has Kjerstad used up his rookie eligibility.  He has only had 99 ABs and 41 games in the majors according to ESPN, but I assume he has quite a few more games on the roster.  I still see him as a trade chip for the O's/Elias to get a TOR starter this offseason.  I would hope it would be for multiple years of control because the farm can't sustain that level of prospect loss.  If the O's trade of package of prospects for a TOR type starter, it should be for a pitcher the O's would extend.  It seems that Elias doesn't value Kjerstad the way he values Cowser because of the lesser defense, imo.

I believe the threshold is 130 ABs, so by that metric he is still a rookie.  However,  I also think there is a 45-day on active roster rule which he surely is over that limit.

It looks like Kjerstad didn't play at all for Norfolk this weekend. Has anyone heard if he has been having any more injury/medical issues?

Wondering same.  Sample size was so small, but prior to taking one off the dome was really swinging the bat well.  Didn't hit after coming off IL and have heard nothing since he went back down (minus the observation that he isn't playing).

If it was a concussion, why wouldn’t they just IL him?

Maybe he was in a situation where he had cleared concussion protocol, but still kind of felt "off" some days and great the others.   Rather than IL him, they could send him down and let him play when he feels OK and sit when he doesn't, without hurting the big league team?

I don't know, must speculation.   There's something going on and it's not just that he's fallen out of favor or something.

If they bring Santander back then there is a question about Heston. Otherwise he simply replaces Santander on the roster.

I think they bring Santander they will use Heston for trade for a pitcher that is controlled and not huge salary.   If they don’t bring him back then Heston takes his spot and they pay for another starter in free agency.  I figure they have about 25-30 million they have allocated to right field and another starter just depends how they will spend it.  Now if Rubenstein wants he can pay more and keep Burnes that works too but we will see, that will just be some of the money coming off the books in Burnes   Kimbrel and maybe Mullins.

They will need definitely need a SP.

Another thing to watch is Mullins. If he is gone that means Cowser to CF. Kjerstad is not a LF in Baltimore. If Mullins stays that changes things.

I don't think they have any plans to trade Heston.  If nothing else, he was no his way to showing with his bat that he was a reliable #4 OF.  Sure, he fits RF best, but the way the bat was coming around before the HBP, he's not gonna be traded.  It's more likely, I think, that Mullins is out, Santander back, but what they choose to do with Jimenez will be interesting.  Provided Eloy shows his value.

Can Eloy field a position, any position?  If he's just a part time DH, he really limits the team and is very overpriced at $16 mill option.

There is zero chance they exercise that option IMO.

    • Its usually not, but in this case it is. If a ball is on the outside edge or top of the zone, Adley needs to look to drive it, bc the result right now is typically 0-1.  Those pitches can be hit for HRs or XBH if you're timed up and in this case, looking for it. Mike Trout talked about this indepth a few years ago. They pitch him differently every year. Analytics and data show holes in your swing or approach and the only way to beat it is to adjust. If Adley is looking for that first pitch location at the top of the zone, and cheats his set up to get to it more easily, he could get hot quick. Same with the outside strike: if you look for 1st pitch CB on the outside half of the strike zone and you get it, it can be absolutely barreled. Just gotta guess right, and in this case, there seems to be a lot of patterns and evidence that if Adley was commmitted to swinging at it and studying the analytics, he could guess right. But patterns show that if anything comes in with spin or near the edges, Adley don't bite on 1st pitch; however, again, typically 0-1 Looking for certain pitches on the edge to swing at early in counts is not a recipe for success if the scouting reports aren't recommending thats the way to attack you. Reports show Adley rarely swings 1st pitch as it is. He's not adjusting. Once he starts barreling 1st pitched edge strikes (even some balls), they will have to learn to pitch him differently.
    • JD Davis is at Norfolk; Garrett Cooper is on the 7 Day DL down there.  Davis has been terrible, Cooper was good until he got hurt; any chance he comes back?  Terrin Vavra is back in the fold. Niko Goodrum and Daniel Johnson are having good AAA seasons. Big shrug of the shoulders with that group but its not all that differentiated from the back of the lineup & bench right now; why not start cycling some AAAA guys through over the next couple weeks to see if you can catch lightening in a bottle?  Make some statements sending a few guys to the bench and potentially DFAing Jiminez, Slater, Soto, or Maton. Keep peeling them off until you get Mounty, Westburg, Kjerstad, and Urias back. If one of these AAAA guys performs, ride the wave until its over, then move on to the next guy or cut him when you get an IL guy back.
    • These are some good points. The loss of Mountcastle and Urias has really hurt us of late, especially since Holliday is not producing and the Orioles choose to trade Norby and Stowers for Rogers. Both of them would look better in the lineup than Maton, Rivera or Slater, or Jimenez. We already knew losing Westburg was going to hurt as well, but we thought Mayo would produce if called up, and he's struggled as bad as Holliday.  The fact that Holliday and Mayo together have been pretty much zeroes makes me question the Orioles hitting development too. I mean, we expect young players to struggle a bit in the beginning, but together they have gone 5-for-64 (.078) with 34 strike outs in there first 11 games of their careers. How is that even possible?  I mean, the Orioles could have batted pitchers and probably gotten better results.  Since going on that tear when he hit 5 home runs in 10 games when he came back up, Holliday has slashed a pitiful .180/.229/.247/.476 with 31Ks in 96 PAs. That's an absolute zero at the plate.  Over that same span, Adley Rutschman has slashed .180/.258/.231/.489 in 89 PAs. That's a blackhole too. How about that big bopper Elias got at the All-Star break. Jimenez is  slashing .177/.239/.274/.513 in 67 PAs over that span. There's your 3rd blackhole. How about Ryan O'Hearn? Well he's in his annual disappearance act in the second half slashing .212/.268/.303/.571 in 71 PAs. 4th blackhole.  So since August 11th, the Orioles have a lineup full of blackholes and have some how managed to go 12-13, which I guess is a good thing considering the way they've hit. Gunnar and Santander to a lesser extent have been carrying this team and one or two of these blackholes need to start producing again.
    • Usually a trip to Boston is a good prescription for an ailing offense. To take advantage of Fenway Park you have to hit it out of the infield, though.
    • At this point if you told me they went 9-9 and finished 91-71 I'd be more than satisfied. Probably wouldnt be good enough for the division though unless 2 or 3 of the wins were against NYY. Hard to see them beating any decent team in a series though right now.
    • Yeah I had the thought of moving Mullins back up recently as well. Mainly just to get Adley out of that spot though.
    • Yesterday was certainly a hate-watch.  Then I got in the truck and hate-listened while doing errands. I'd like to see some guys come off the IL and get back to playing normal but the clock is ticking and I'm afraid that's too much to ask for.  I'd like to believe that the team can go on a run but as you said that's blind faith.
