Well this explains why we had to pay more than expected.  A bit of deadline bidding war took place.  It still makes little sense of what Fedde went for compared to Rogers.

Yes the ChiSox should have definitely gotten more for Fedde but when Chris Getz is in charge.. well clearly it’s a $hit show in Southside and it ain’t getting better anytime soon.

Hell, even what the Dodgers gave up for Flaherty. Yeah, I get Flaherty has a negative history here and he's a true rental, but I have a very hard time saying this Rogers trade meaningfully helps the O's this year. Maybe he's a long-term play because of the additional 2 years left of control, but man...Rogers reads like a borderline #5 this year with...not much to show about him exceeding that next year and beyond. He's like Cole Irvin when he was acquired, but Irvin cost significantly less. The Astros certainly overpaid for Kikuchi (also a rental), but he at least has a ton of upside/history even though he was getting bombed recently after starting strong.

Fedde cost pennies. That was a miss by Elias, IMHO.

I get it - Skubal would have cost far too much. But Rogers just isn't exciting unless the O's really, truly believe he can bounce back to some shadow of himself from a few years ago. But right now it feels like a desperation move from Elias.

When you wait till the last minute, you have no choice but to overpay.  I would have rather got a top back end reliever than Rogers and roll with what we had in the 5th spot, which wasn't good.  I guess we'll see how it works out.

I have a hard time believing the O's couldn't have gotten Anderson for Norby/Stowers, or at the worst added like a 20-25 ranked prospect.

I personally did not like the trade when it was announced, as I thought the Os could have traded for a starter in the off-season and not had to pay as much as a trade at the trade deadline.

I didn't see Roger's as an upgrade, and still don't. I thought that Norby and Stowers could have been better used to acquire a stronger BP piece. Rogers does nothing to help the Os in a playoff push

It’s still way too early to judge this trade, but Stowers is 1 for 15 with 9 K’s and the Marlins thought so much of Norby, they sent him to the Jacksonville Shrimp.

They want Norby to learn to play third

And then owe him a lot of money going forward?  No thanks

Time will tell whether this was an acceptable price for Rogers, and that'll mostly just come down to how well the O's can "fix" him.

As for why Elias got Rogers instead of Fedde/Anderson/etc, I think the extra years of control tend to be valued a lot higher by front offices than by fans.

I have no doubt they valued it.

But it’s something that should be valued less for crappy players.

    • He’s an awful matchup for Cowser
    • As badly as we have played for 2 months now, we STILL have not lost more than 2 in a row since before the All Star Break.   So I'm going to cling to that and say we get the W tonight.   Then one more in the series and take 2 of 3. I am as perplexed by the hitting slump as everyone else.   But I refuse to believe it is "real" and somehow indicative of talent, and that it is impossible or even unlikely that we will break out of it.   Adley IS better than the numbers we have seen for several months.   Just by virtue of age, Holliday is a guaranteed lock to put up better overall numbers than he has so far.   O'Hearn, like Adley, has enough of a track record that we know he is better than what we have seen the last month or so.   Santander is slumping which was somewhat expected due to his great stretch, but that slump won't last forever either. There's absolutely no reason this team should have so many games with no hits for the first 3-4 innings, or only 2 or 3 hits for the first 6, 7, innings or even the game.     It sure as hell leads me to question what kind of hitting coaching we have, but I refuse to believe the team we are putting out on the field should have those kind of games with the frequency that they have been.   So I can only conclude that it will end.   Gunnar has started getting hot.   If a couple more hitters join the fun it can be contagious.
    • You are never as good as you look when going well and never as bad as you look when you are not going well. That’s always the reality.
    • He very well may not have an injury, but also very well may have back that's bothering him a bit. I don't know, but I have to hope his absolute awful slump at the plate since June is because of something not right with him physically.
    • I don’t think his performance was as sustainable as it was in previous years though. He was hitting the ball slightly harder, but his walk rate was way down and his K rate was way up. His BABIP was also a lot higher than his career number and IIRC, his xwOBA was worse than his first 2 seasons. He was still good but most advanced stats pointed to him still being worse offensively than his first 2 seasons. His BB/K rate has stabilized at least, he’s just not doing any damage when he makes contact.
    • We have a very bad end of the year schedule for attendance.  We know once school comes back that attendance will drop unless you have important games vs teams in contention.  Our schedule since middle of August when schools went back has is. 4 games Houston drew well but then had the Sunday night game the day before a lot of schools went back that hurt attendance. 3 vs the White Sox 3 vs the Rays 3 vs the Tigers  3 vs the Giants. All the big series seem to be on the road.  Red Sox which is semi fighting for playoffs, Yanks which could be for division then Twins which could be for the 1st Wild card seed.   The Yankees and Twins series would have drawn well well for us compared to what we will see with who we have.
    • Attendance is only going to be so high for weekday games, especially during the school year.  Next year you won’t have the Phillies series at home, so you have to adjust for that as well. So the team is going to have to do some special things (agree with Frobby that winning in the postseason will help). One thing I don’t see happening as much is the drive to sign up for season tickets now to get postseason tickets this year. With so many getting to go last year, after years of not going, there is a certainly level of novelty that gets worn off the second straight year. So I really think what they do in the postseason and offseason will determine where things stand for next year.
