How many of you out there can say that your dreams came true?

Some dreams coming true have less to do with financial success, or acclaim.

Some are simple dreams. Making a family, or falling in love, or achieving something tangible.

Some are loftier.

I can say in my life, pretty much all of my professional dreams came true, and personally to have a family and now grandchildren, well, those dreams coming true are the best.

I write this tonight because I saw a young man's dream come true on a Major League Baseball field.

22 year old Coby Mayo, the third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles started a major league game and got his first major league hit.

The road to getting there, to realising that dream came with a lot of hard work to go with immense talent, but too, it came with failure and some disappointment.

Coby struck out more than half of his 17 at bats and hadn't gotten a hit and had some missteps in the field, and some fans winced, and some said he wasn't ready for the big leagues, and some even suggested he should be sent back to the minors.

Look, baseball, even when you are a successful hitter, you will fail 2/3rds of the time.

Babe Ruth, perhaps the greatest player in baseball history struck out more than 1,300 times.

There will be many more ups and downs, euphoric moments and heartbreaking ones for Coby.

But tonight, in a moment he will cherish forever, in front of tens of thousands of fans and his father and mother sitting in the 27th row behind home plate, Coby saw his dream come true.

And he made it happen with his ability and hard work.

It was a wonderful sight.

And a welcome one.

Coby's father got the ball from his son's first hit. The Orioles manager Brandon Hyde gave the Mayo family the lineup cards.

The Orioles won 4-1 which was somewhat significant, but something else happened tonight.

A dream came true.

It was great.  I hope this leads to him calming down and getting over his rookie jitters.  It would be very important for the Orioles if he was a big positive bat coming down the stretch.  We really need the boost.

You are entitled to your opinion, but in my view that's a harsh, almost joyless opinion.And by the way, I didnt suggest he was a  sensational success. I said there would be more ups and downs.I said there is more heartbreak and euphoria ahead perhaps.I was just talking about his ONE moment of the realisation of a dream and all he worked for. My goodness, how hard is that to grasp? Sheesh.

I’m sure Mayo is relieved to have that first hit out of the way.  Now he can exhale and just play his game.
