Please elaborate on your pick to start tomorrow.

If Povich is not available, then anyone who is. We have seen enough of Irvin this season. I will be glad if he proves me wrong.

Irvin had an ERA of 7.16 in June and July.  There was nothing unjust about his demotion.

Facts, schmacts...  we need story here.  One rich on grit and verteranocity and come from behind wonderfulness.

Besides Irvin's FIP was only 5.64 during that time, considerably better than Burnes' last start - for that matter it's in the same neighborhood as Burnes' last three consecutive starts.  In the race to lose our way to the AL East title, it's clear we still have work to do.

A 5.64 ERA is still awful and did you just try and compare Irvin to Burnes? Burnes has a career ERA+ of 128.   Irvin's career ERA+ is 88.  The track record speaks for itself.  Besides, the stretch from Burnes you are referring to is 15 IP.  Irvin's was 44 IP.  That's nearly triple the amount.

I’m kind of interested in seeing Brandon Young, but the timing didn’t work out because he pitched on Sunday.  Povich was recalled even though he’s not available until tomorrow at the earliest.  So, I assume this will be one and done for Irvin and then they’ll insert Povich somewhere?

One of Selby, Tate or Smith needs to be optioned for Irvin. Another will need to go for Akin when he is back from paternity leave.

I’m going to guess Selby goes for Irvin today and Tate soaks up some innings today before going for Akin. But Smith could be optioned if they want both Selby and Tate available today.

This could definitely be one and done for Irvin in the rotation, but with the Eflin injury I wonder if they try to put Irvin back in the pen instead of DFA’ing him. I believe he could not reject the outright to AAA after clearing waivers the first time, but now he could now if they DFA him again.

Young and Irvin are really the only SP depth remaining now, and there’s big questions about all of the SP except Burnes, Kremer and Irvin left standing now making it through the rest of the year. Suárez threw a lot over winter ball, Rogers barely pitched last year and is already pushing his career high IP, and Povich and especially Young are still building up innings as young SP (with Young coming off TJS as well).

I think Young is a much better option than Irvin now, but Irvin is durable if nothing else. Young also had the 40-man roster working against him (although he will need to be added this offseason, so that’s not much of an impediment), but I also wonder if they will be conscious of trying to not use one of Young’s options this year. This year has really emphasized the importance of optionable SP depth and he projects to be one of those depth guys for the next few years. That’s a very marginal difference in value and it doesn’t outweigh trying to have the best team we can put on the field now, but it could be a factor under consideration.

    • Dean's "higher ups" word choice was interesting. At the Birdland event last week, Eve gave the boilerplate answer we've heard many times about the collaborative approach, etc., but at the end of the day (I might cynically call it plausible deniability) Hyde makes the choices. It doesn't seem like a player would pick that kind of descriptor for their manager. That said, Holliday's little league play was devastating as Akin had handled Devers so well to start.   In April, Elias gave the quote about feeding Holliday some 2B reps so he could be ready for a night game at Yankee Stadium.    I'm nervous - it is the end of the season now and that's a routine groundout.    It might need to be 3B Urias, 2B Westburg. The cameras caught Hyde racing out of the dugout perhaps even before O'Neill touched home.   I don't think that's typical behavior, but I could give a grace if he needed a few extra seconds to be ready for the Holliday play question in the presser about 10 minutes ahead.
    • Why do you think he's overly reliant on L/R matchups???   Yes, he definitely emphasizes them.   But I think the results bear out that he is correct to do so.   Really good team pinch hitting numbers. I agree with criticism of his bullpen management, though I wonder how much of that is dictated (not as in they tell him who to bring in during a game, but the organization endorses and even pushes the overall strategy of using relievers for an inning or less all the time).
    • Specifically on O’Hearn, you can see how frustrated he is right now. Felt like he slammed his bat down multiple times in this series. They’re pressing big time.
    • My reading after watching the video, Dean took a different route than the questions intent. It’s a pretty generic question “the team hasn’t been able to get on the same page the hitting defense pitching etc. anything that can change with 3 weeks remaining?” id guess the expected answer is something about getting guys back from IL and finish the season strong. For some reason Dean used it as an opportunity to go a different route and talk about who plays
    • I didn't know that pointing out a fact equated to crying,  but whatever.    I'm not taking up for how Elias has managed this team. I think they've made quite a few mistakes along the way that have diminished any long term window or pipeline.
    • It seemed like he was responding to “does anything need to change?” and giving a non-answer.  It would be weird if he thought the issue was roster/lineup/bullpen decisions because there aren’t really great alternatives.
    • It was a frustrating loss for sure.
