Does anybody "have" to pitch today?

Down 0-1 in the 3-game format, this is a scenario where if you have any elite relievers, many game theorists would suggest you ought to accelerate them into the competition.

Josh Hader in the 2018 NLCS Game 7 pitching the 3rd-5th innings a famous example by a Raysian organization in the other league.    The Rays themselves shortened Tyler Glasnow to 9 Batters Faced when they beat Gerrit Cole in 2020 ALDS Game 5.

It has been mentioned if you squint for a Witt weakness, maybe it is premium left handed velocity.    Are G. Soto or Cionel guys you have to think about if Eflin isn't dealing or the batters don't give him some runs to work with before the 2nd time through the order?     Cano's recent form hasn't been top notch, and Coulombe may still be slightly rusty, but those are guys who have largely been star caliber relievers for 2 years.

Zach Eflin is a very fine pitcher, but he isn't Corbin Burnes.

There’s not a single pitcher in our bullpen who fits the description you’re talking about. Eflin going deep is our best and maybe only chance today. God knows we aren’t going to outslug anyone, and calling any of our relievers ‘elite’ is a serious stretch.

We have 11 pitchers available today.  It’s all hands on deck. Getting length won’t be a consideration.  Ideally Eflin gets through at least 2 turns of lineup - Hyde will be wary about giving him a third.

We don’t have a specific elite pitcher who “has to pitch”. It will be about matchups and who gives us the best chance in a particular inning.

I think Eflin gets 2 times through the order unless there’s big trouble.

I don’t think he gets 3 unless he’s totally dealing and/or there’s a big lead.

If it is Massey-Witt-Pasquantino 1-2-3 again, the day is ripe for one of those Third Time Through the Order pulls even if he has kept runs off the board, because you will want to be free to remove Cionel or G. Soto before Sal Perez at cleanup.

We literally do not have any elite relievers. I trust Eflin more than anyone we have in the pen as long as he isn't struggling.

Eflin needs to go 6 today, minimum.

There's no one in our bullpen that's so elite that they absolutely have to pitch today.  All hands on deck, but they're not particularly great hands and any of those hands could be dominant or any of those hands could blow up and let the game get away without warning.

    • I really wanted Erceg at the deadline. Also Kirby Yates.  I do think Elias went way too far down the tinkerer route during the trade deadline. Soto, Dominguez, Eloy, and Rogers all had big to major warts. The only trade that I thought was a slam dunk was Eflin. But everybody else acquired felt like Elias needed to be the smartest person in the room: Rogers with his velocity issues and bad peripherals and advanced stats Soto with his inability to get righties out and control issues Dominguez was a solid, yet not great pickup especially if he was to be the closer in waiting for Kimbrel Eloy with excellent hard hit balls, but a ton of grounders and lack of true distance power I think Elias felt that Hyde could just piece the bullpen together situationally, but it actually caused some other headaches for Hyde as members of the bullpen already had situational issues. Maybe Elias thought Eloy could be fixed midseason a la Aaron Hicks (or in the beginning of the season a la O'Hearn). But either way, it was Eflin and a lot of "what ifs!". Not great.
    • Yeah, but have you seen Adley's?  Schwing.  She's so hot that even SG would be distracted from posting on OH.
    • Yep this trade deadline just like last year is a failure. (Though I did really like the Eflin move quite a bit.)  I know all the Elias apologist is going to go bunkers for saying this but the shine is coming off some for me.
    • Think a lot of folks pop up once they get a girlfriend.
    • A thing of note, he had that back issue in the middle of August, but on July 27th, he was hit on the hand during the Rangers game. At that point in time, he was batting 300 with an 830 OPS. The 2 weeks leading up to that, he was batting 309 with a near 900 OPS. So, it's not like he was struggling when he was hit. In the 2 weeks of games after: 120 batting average, 519 OPS. And we all know how he's been month to month the remaining months. So, the big question: how much did that play into it? Probably a combination of a long grueling season, hand injury, and the back issue.  Even looking at Adley last year full season, he struggled in June (660 OPS), but then followed that up with the following OPS's in July, August, and September respectively: 776, 770, 922. I really think this is something nagging. An amazing hitter like Adley doesn't just completely fall off a cliff like that. And certainly not at 26 y/o.
    • Adley's popping up cause he's got a girlfriend. See what I did there?
    • This thread getting to 50+ posts is even ridiculouser.
