Should the Orioles keep Povich, Kremer and Rogers in the organization for 2025?

The Orioles are very likely to lose Burnes and certainly need to add a starter this offseason.

The Orioles, whether fans want to acknowledge it or not, value Rogers and feel they can get something out of him.

They also clearly value Kremer, as he has 90 starts the last 4 seasons and has basically pitched to the level of a #3 starter the last 3 seasons combined.

Povich got 16 starts in 2024.  He ended the year very strong.

The question for me is, do you keep all of these guys. I know we also have McDermott but I think his injury last year buys time for him to start more in the minors.  And we are unclear about Suarez. So, let’s just keep this discussion to the 3 I mentioned.

Povich and Rogers can be in the minors and we can treat them as depth but do the Orioles do that? They clearly like Rogers and while Povich starting 16 was more out of necessity, he did show well at times.

We know Eflin and GRod are in the rotation, assuming health.

We know they need to add one guy but if you want to add 2, do you keep all of these guys or do you look to trade one of them?

There are a lot of ways I would be happy with the Os going this offseason w/r/t pitching and trading (likely) Povich or Kremer is something that could come into play.

Would you rather look for upgrades on these guys and trade someone or just keep everyone because you need/want that depth?

And would you be ok just adding one starter and having either Povich or Rogers in the rotation?

I think it's an easy call to keep all 3 right now.

Kremer is in the rotation somewhere, and both Povich and Rogers will have to fight for the 5th spot, or they will come up throughout the year.

The Orioles don't have a lot of LH SP depth, so I think they will want to keep both Povich and Rogers.

That said, if the O's go out and sign 2 SP as rotation upgrades, Kremer is a good trade candidate.

Keep all 3. Kremer absolutely should be in the rotation. As things stand now, here is the rotation (to me):

  • SP1: Acquire one
  • SP2: Eflin
  • SP3: Grayson
  • SP4: Kremer
  • SP5: Acquire one *and* open competition with the depth (in order) being: Suarez, Povich, McDermott, Rogers

They can't go into next season taking chances. I was on record saying it was irresponsible to go into 2024 knowing Bradish was hurt, Means had a setback/massive injury history, Wells injury history, Suarez being an unknown and not acquiring a back of the rotation arm. And that meant your depth was Irvin (at the time) and...really nobody else that was reasonably ready.

Can't do the same this year. Gotta get a #1, and I'd argue a BOR arm that is reliable if not spectacular and if/when somebody has a setback in spring/offseason, well at least you have some options.

I think you've got to go into the year with 7 healthy starters.  If both Povich and Rogers still have options then it's ok to start them in the minors.  They will be needed at some point.

Eflin, Rodriguez, Kremer, new SP, then either Povich or Rogers.  I'd consider adding another whether that's Suarez or someone similar.

Since adding the splitter Kremer has been very good.  I think he's become underrated.

I’m going to assume they don’t sign Snell, Burnes or Fried. Snell is my #1 target but i doubt it happens.

So, pick who you want from that next tier. I’ll go with Pivetta but am open to other names.

That said, in the scenario of only adding one guy, I would also make a push for Bieber. There is some talk he just goes back to Cleveland but if he doesn’t, the likely deal he’s looking at is a 1 year deal with an option or a 2 year deal fully guaranteed.

He likely isn’t in the majors until June at the earliest but he could be a big help in the second half.

You pay him a cheaper salary and maybe throw some incentives on top of it and then next year he’s making 15-20M or something along those lines.

That is something I would be very interested in doing.

Just a matter of if he becomes available and if you want to guarantee the second year or not.

Ks went up but walks also jumped.  If he can keep the Ks up and get the walks back down, he moves up a peg.

It depends on who's available and who's acquired.  As it stands, yeah, I'm in favor of keeping those three.  Kremer is the 3rd or 4th starter next year.

I'd like to see them sign a starter in free agency.  I know it won't be Burnes or Snell but IMO the rotation is:

FA/Eflin

Eflin/FA

G-Rod

Kremer

Open competition between Povich, Rogers, maybe Suarez if he comes back.

Povich did seem to come around in the last month of the season.  I know he doesn't have the dominant fastball velocity that everyone wants to see but there's some things to like.  It's obvious there's something they like about Rogers, we'll see what they can coax out of him.

I'd be open to trading Kremer depending on what comes back.  I highly doubt that this happens though.

Dont think you get him cheap. If so probably back to Cleveland. How much would you offer Means? how high would you go for Saurez? Dont forget Wells and Bradish could be back next year. Would love to have him though.

Bradish isn’t pitching next year unless it’s relief late in the year.

Zero interest in bringing back the other 3.

Povich and Rogers both have two options remaining.  Kremer has one.  McDermott has two options as well.  As of right now we're at,

#1 Eflin

#2 Grayson

#3 Kremer (I'm putting Kremer above Suarez because Kremer was going to start Game 3 if need be.  So the org favors him over Suarez) - 1 option remaining

#4 Suarez - no options remaining

#5 Povich - 2 options remaining

#6 McDermott - 2 options remaining

IL Possible returns at some point - Bradish, Wells

I would prefer bringing Burnes back obviously.  Then adding a vet type as a AAA depth SP.

Yes and this is why I think we get only one SP this offseason. Hopefully Burnes.

And really this is what it comes down to.

Do you want to add 1 or 2 starters?  If you want to add 2, you can still keep everyone for depth but it perhaps allows you to deal an arm if you so choose.
