It appeared to me that he was going to call him out if he had held onto the ball and couldn't get a good view of whether the ball was out or not.

Agree....I am not sure why the announcers aren't bringing this up.

Another blown call by an ump! Maclenand and his friggin deliberate calls.....acts like hes not making a call cause the runner never touched the plate.....then makes a late safe call......WTF....dude never touched the plate.......should be 2 outs and the game still tied.

I think he still got in but his hand was stepped on by Barrett's cleat so it was hidden from view.

TIVO's are both a wonder and a curse. Here's what it looked like to me:

• Initial no-call, while the ump looked to see if the C held the ball
• Then, he watches the loose ball roll around some.
• Then, he watches the C scramble after it some.
• Then, he watches the C realize the nature of the situation and move to tag him.
• Throughout all this, the ump appears to be truly waiting to see what's gonna happen.
• Then, just when the C is reaching to tag him, but before he does, the ump waves "safe".

I don't know how to reconcile what I saw with the idea that a loose ball resolved it. But, it is what it is.

I'm not upset, I'm mainly just really puzzled. It doesn't make sense to me. One way or another, this is not what umps should do.

I lived here in Colorado when the Rockies came to be, and I moved back home a few years ago. To say the city is just in love with the Rockies would be an understatement. The Broncos playing yesterday was an afterthought - lots of people still don't know who won that game. Rockies jerseys can't be found for miles around - there was a piece on the news yesterday and they followed a woman who had to drive to five different cities before she could find a jersey to wear to today's game.

And yes, the fans here are indeed passionate about baseball and their Rockies, win or lose, believe it or not. It's very exciting, and makes me drool over the O's someday (in my lifetime???) having a fun young team like this Rockies squad.

I gotta change the subject a bit. I love Ernie Johnson as a studio host, both for NBA and now for MLB. Unlike some of the people at ESPN, he avoids making up stupid sayings, using hyperbole and generally being annoying.

Instead he offers good insight and, as funny as it sounds, is "plain". Which is a good thing. I am going to enjoy these playoffs if he continuously hosts the post-game shows on TBS.

He's one of the main reasons Inside the NBA won an Emmy, IMO.

Yes, he never touched the plate, but was very close. I think the delay in the call was to see if the catcher had the ball. When the ump saw the ball loose, he called him safe.
