Do we need a fundamental shift in draft philosophy?

Recommended Posts

Suppose Hobgood get's his pre-draft advertised velocity back and starts sitting 92-93 and looking dominant sometime this year or next? Would that convince you? I didn't believe Hobgood was BPA either, but I don't think it's a slam dunk to say Jordan didn't believe it.

I mean, when he was taken. My stance on him doesn't have to do with what he's doing now. I don't understand what Jordan saw to make him go against everyone elses board and make that pick. Hobgood does have some good traits and I can see why Jordan liked him, however I didn't think there was anything there to rank him over Matzek.

Reading between the lines, Jordan saw a big kid who had good mechanics, a plus fastball, and curve with plus potential, and an easy sign. Jordan insists that the physical traits had more to do with the selection than the signability. Let's assume Jordan is/was being honest. Your stance is that Hobgood was not the BPA. Fine, but how can you say it doesnt' matter how he performs on the field now or next year? If Hobgood becomes what Jordan thinks/expects him to come then Jordan is vindicated and Hobgood was the BPA. It's just a difference of opinion. Either Jordan was right or he was wrong. It's still a bit early to say he was wrong. Hobgood's not exactly stinking up the joint in Delmarva. Matzek is not a slam dunk hall of famer yet either.

I see what you're saying and you have a point.

But I can retaliate with an SG-like "Doesn't matter how they pan out, still doesn't make it the correct pick, you're wrong and I'm right" stance... :D;)

Jokes aside, yes, if he does turn it on and vindicates Jordan's stance and you have to give Jordan props.

Who are we to say he doesn't usually take the BPA? We have no idea how he ranks all the players each year. We can say he didn't take what seemed like the BPA according to various sources and/or our opinions, but I don't see any reason to doubt that he picks who he thinks is the BPA most of the time, with signability obviously coming into play.

I just don't see why we should make a focused effort at finding expensive signs in every round...the whole reasoning behind classifying the draft as a 'crap shoot' is that there's rarely any connection between a player's hype in the draft and his development in the minor leagues into a major league prospect.

It's good to find some gems here and there, but to make a concerted effort at seeking those types of players isn't going to lead to more consistent success with developing prospects for the majors.

    • Loved seeing Eloy's enthusiasm at joining the team over the summer, but yeah it was way past time for this.  I didn't realize he still had options remaining, so I guess he's still around for a 'break glass in case of emergency' moment - hopefully he's done for the year though.  And declining the option is beyond a no-brainer, so that is in all likelihood it for Eloy as an O.
    • I've been fired up every day since my divorce hearing on 11/12/19. The third best day of my life. In all seriousness, life is good. Remember the 15 straight losing seasons? They're not perfect, but today is a new day and yesterday doesn't matter. Westburg, Urias, et. al. have returned, our BP is stronger and we have our best 3 SP set to go this series. We're 6-4 versus them this year, including taking 2/3 last time we were in NY. Pick your heads up a little bit. Will they win the WS? No, I don't think so. But guess what??! They've got a chance! I was at the game Sunday, and I'll be tuned in to every inning of the last 6 games. LFG.
    • I don't think there is any way to be a sport's fan and not require some form of therapy. For me, OH is my therapy center. If you invest any part of your being in a sport's team, there is no prescription for tranquility. You just have to come to a strategy that best allows you to follow your team. Mine for the most part is to walk away and turn it off. Wife gets mad at me because I won't keep watching a game when we are losing or playing poorly. Says I'm not a real fan. She's probably right but I don't view watching poor performance of any kind as a good use of time. I also don't get too much into second guessing or modern statistical analysis. Not interested in coulda - woulda - shoulda and though I am awed by all the data, it's just too much for me to digest and use. I let you all do that for me. If I think it's over the top I may say something but mostly enjoy the read. In this way, OH has helped me get through the down years and the good ones too. And it's also great in between.  So, in some fashion, we are all addicted to a game - a team. The trick is to remember this is entertainment - not life. And that can be hard. Now beat the Damn Yankees and make me feel better cause the way you've been playing is killing me 😄!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • This was the correct choice, glad to see them make it.
    • How about..." we wont win another game in the regular season"?
