Gold Glove announcement tonight...scouts perspective ( Update - All 3 Orioles win)

Having thought about it overnight, I don't think the selection of Jones is ridiculous. Trout only started 108 games in CF, and in my mind, there's a question whether anyone should win a Gold Glove when playing less than 75-80% of the season. And, Jones had a better range factor and more assists. And yes, I do think he gets a little bonus for playing in all 162 games, which is not easy to do. My bottom line is that I am surprised Jones won, but it's not the biggest ripoff ever.

However, I do not think that most people who are saying they think Trout should have won are doing so because they have a prejudice against Jones. He's not a perfect player, and when you watch him every day, sometimes the flaws grate on you. We just need to remember that there are a lot of teams that would love to have him.

Surprising about Matt not getting a bonus. I asked Roch about all star/GG bonuses last year or the year before. He said he couldn't be sure because the contracts aren't totally public, but he thought a bonus was pretty standard. Almost like part of the basic contract given any player.

And congrats to all three! Especially JJ. I expected him to get snubbed again, even if he did deserve it most.

Matt does not sign Orioles contracts. His is renewed.

Nice rant, especially when I wasn't referring to you. I very clearly said "some people" and you even bolded it, so I assume you read it.

When people just bad-mouth Adam about "blowing bubbles" and "trying to look cool", I know what they're insinuating. Do you?

I didn't know who you were referring to, so for that I'm in the wrong and I apologize, I just took your post at its face value, read that bold part as a blanket general statement, and went from there, which is the post you see and which I stand by. Again, I'm not going to say some haven't said things, or what they say doesn't have some underlying tones to it. This is America, it's never been perfect, it's never going to be perfect. However, lots of people on this board, who I don't believe to have any underlying agendas and biases, have called Jones out on this stuff before. Bottom line, if Matt Wieters stuck his tongue out when he took his mask off every time he tried to throw out a guy at second trying to steal, and he was only throwing guys out 25-30% of the time instead of 35-40% of the time like he has, people would be on him vehemently. If Mark Reynolds did the Fernando Rodney celebration every he made a nice play, and his performance didn't warrant it, he'd get ripped to shreds on here. It's the nature of fans, when things are going right, people won't care about anything anyone does. When they don't, they're going to criticize everything under the sun down to whether or not someone has a major league-worthy name. That's the nature of being a baseball fan, agenda have nothing to do with it for the majority.

Me too....I (admittedly a homer) don't get the fuss...Trout - through not fault of his own - was injured in April and then - to help his team - played @ 30 games in left...the Twins' Span (the other guy some thought should have won) only played 125 games in center...Maybe folks don't know that this is the first year the GG is awarded for the specific OF position and NOT the best three outfielders period

Jonesy deserved it....Consistent CF play over an entire season....

Exactly. I stated this in a previous thread, but differently in that even being considered for a GG was going to reinforce his bad habits. Winning one will cement it.

This is pretty much my thoughts on it. Buck's remarks about Markakis are equally concerning. We should proabably be taking a look at improving the OF defense in RF/CF, but instead we're going to gloat over these guys because of GG's. Not good imo.

I took Buck's comments about Nick as just talking up his own guy.

I love Adam, I'm happy for him, but I feel like each GG is just another excuse to not work on his holes. And it basically kills my dream of signing Bourn and moving him to LF.

He makes some spectacular plays because of his athleticism, but I've also seen him blow some Cans of Corn. Of course, that was in between blowing bubbles.;)

I don't agree. I think Jones has always had a good work ethic and a drive to improve. I do not think the fact that he has won two Gold Gloves will tell him that he doesn't need to work on his defense or that he shouldn't listen to his coaches. And, I have no doubt that Buck and his coaches will get their points across, when they are not happy with how Jones (or any other player) is playing defense. It probably won't be done in quotes to the press, because that's not Buck's style.

Buck, also explaining how Jones won his.
I'm not going to lie, seeing so many people say they have no idea how Jones won surprises me, since every year we've seen an O' not win over a previous winner, we talk about how being a previous winner is a significant factor.

I don't think AJ should have gotten it over Trout, but I can see why he did. I think it illustrates just how much of a gap-closer being a previous winner is. I also feel a bit bad at how much Jones is getting lambasted for winning. He didn't nominate himself; it's not his fault if he won it over someone more deserving. What's he supposed to do, come out and say he didn't deserve it?

I find it remarkable that so many here are so unhappy that AJ got a second GG. There were years that the O's never received recognition for anything because of their lowly team record. I am glad for them all. It is voted managers and coaches. Which is more accurate than the All Star voting in my opinion. So just enjoy it and don't tarnish it just because you don't agree. I think AJ had a difficult year this year often having strangers to his right and left. He was always there right next to Davis when he was in right field, even on routine fly balls. Is he perfect? No. Is Trout better? Most likely (haven't seen him much except on highlight reels).

Maybe just once in a while when the O's do get some positive recognition some OHers could put their biases and hatred (yes hatred) aside and enjoy it with the team and organization.

Subjectively he doesn't look like one of the best CF's in the league. Objectively he is clearly and consistently not one of the best CF's in the league according to the metrics. I'm not sure why realistic assessments/opinions of the teams players qualifies as hatred (yes hatred). Pretty dumb comment on your part imo. I'm with socalbirdfan that this type of award and the associated rhetoric (like that coming from Buck) could have an adverse effect on the team.

Congrats to all 3 Orioles GG winners! Really great to see the O's get recognition where they deserve it. I didn't think Jones would win, but after reading through the posts on here, I can see how he won - and he deserves it! I didn't reallize Trout played that many games in LF.

Our defense up the middle is impressive. With Manny added to the mix for next year, and a healthy Markakis, there is a very good chance that we win at least another 3 next year! For once, the future is starting to look bright for them O's. DIG IT!!!!!

I'm very happy with the quotes coming out of our players, like these:

Hardy:

"I'm learning more and more about it every day when they talk about Mark Belanger. And obviously we know about Cal Ripken," said shortstop J.J. Hardy, a first-time winner of the award.

"When they talk to me about these guys and compare them to me, it's an honor to even be mentioned in the same sentence as those guys."

Wieters:

"We all know that one of the greatest defenders of all time, Brooksie (Robinson), was an Oriole his entire career," Wieters said. "He set the standard for how you should play defense in an Orioles uniform."

Jones:

"It's a blessing to be in the conversation with such a historic franchise and all the guys who wore the Orioles jersey and played unbelievable defense," Jones said. "I'm not even close to my man Paul Blair. That man went out there and did it. He went out there and handled his business.

"To be included with Brooks, Cal, Belanger ... I think (Roberto) Alomar won one in an Orioles uniform ... you've got guys who went out there and took pride in their defense. You've got to take pride in your defense."

You can debate whether all the Gold Gloves were deserved, but to me it's obvious these three guys work at their craft and know how important it is to focus on defense. The fact that they know how important good defense has been to the Orioles' winning teams of the past also shows me that they understand that this is something they need to continue to work on to keep winning. I'm pretty sure Buck won't let them forget.

    • I have to think something is going on behind the scenes. They look like they have just quit. Hyperbole, I know, but I wonder if there is anxiety over new ownership wanting their own people in the FO? Before you all tear me apart, IT’S JUST AN OBSERVATION!
    • Some don’t like this quote from Hyde but this kind of goes back to what the hitting coaches are saying. The coaches (if we are to believe them) are preparing these guys but once they get in the box, things are changing. This is all mental with these guys. It is time for them to relax and start having fun again. They need a players only team meeting and get themselves loosened up.
    • I doubt it is normal, though I’m sure that well more than half the pitchers who pitch for any particular team were not drafted by that team.   Teams use so many pitchers these days, and there are so many pitchers who cycle around the league off the waiver wire.
    • Couple of things about what Mike said: 1).   Grayson will not start during the regular season.    Time has run out to build him up.   That means Burnes, Eflin. Suarez, Kremer and Povich the rest of the way if they can stay healthy.   Maybe Grayson as an opener or a reliever in the playoffs. Coulombe  as early as Friday.  I am guess either Smith or Kimbrel go. Westy and  Urias  on rehab  in the next few days.   Getting these guys back could be a  big mental boost for the team.  What level of performance they will be able to produce coming off a layoff is another things.      I would think Mayo and Holliday are optioned. Mountcastle is swinging but his wrist is still sore.   Where that goes in anyones guess.   If he comes back Jimenez will not be needed. 2).  When Mike says this has been a winning team for that last two years and he believes they can get back to that,  to me he is not just talking about the team.     He is talking about himself.    This is the first time Mike has experienced things not going the way he planned to this degree.    Quite frankly his looks a little shell shocked.    The pitching having troubles with injuries is reality to him.  Pitchers get hurt.    But his offense going from 5 runs per game in the first half  to almost zero is shocking to him.   He did not see that coming.  Adley, and O'Hearn were supposed to step up when needed.   Instead they took a step back.  None of Holliday, Mayo, or Kjerstad being able to help in the 2nd half was not the way this was planned.    Here is hoping the Westy, Urias and Kjerstad can help real soon.
    • This board is smart enough to realize that the grass isn't always greener. The only way I see Hyde on the hot seat is if we miss the playoffs completely, which still feels very unlikely. Even then, I doubt he'd be fired during the offseason, but maybe. But then what? I don't think you give Buck Britton a shot at this roster. He's doing his thing and doing it well at AAA helping to develop guys. Could bring back Buck Showalter or Joe Girrardi, those sound like fun names. Or better yet, I bet everyone here with a torch and a pitchfork has their own little crystal ball with a short list of candidates ready to catch lightning in a bottle.
    • The 4-run deficit was surmountable if we had more than one player who can hit the damn ball.   Kimbrel giving up six runs in the 9th may turn out to be a blessing.
