Matt Hobgood - is there hope? (No, there is not. Indy League bound.)

They're using Hobgood for more innings and more often than I'd expected in the early going. Personally, I'm thrilled with how it's going.

Me too. I'm very happy for Matt and think he will reach the majors some day.

Great story and a great kid.

He went 3 innings last week. Maybe he experienced some fatigue or soreness after that one and they are backing off a little?

That's a reasonable guess as good as any.

Just pointing out that we were looking for him to get more IP per outing and there seems to be some regression there. Not a big deal in the long run I suppose.

How's his velocity? His peripherals look pretty crappy....10ks and 10 bbs in 15 ip.

Right now I wouldn't worry about his peripherals........Hobgood is working off some serious rust. He will be brought along slowly.

This draft pick used to really piss me off, but 4 years later I couldnt care less, that draft was one miss after another. If we weren't the team in love with Trout, we probably weren't getting anyone who was likely to ever help this team much. Who were people "mocking" to the Os, I dont recall but I don't imagine it was anyone we'd be pumped about today.

I think everyone would be pretty tickled with Zack Wheeler....

Many people were mocking Zack Wheeler as the "signable pick" for the O's and Joe Jordan even said it came down to him versus Hobgood as I recall. Knowing that, I feel the exact opposite and am incredibly irritated by how Wheeler has become one of the best pitching prospects in baseball (likely to have an impact with the Mets this year) while Hobgood has yet to advance past A ball.

Everyone has us taking Wheeler in 2009, but looking at the names, only Trout, Minor, Miller, Crow, Myers, Leake, and Storen really stick out to me. Only Trout and Miller look like studs.

Wheeler is in the Mets org. and not pitching that great... he's only 23 and in AAA though.

I remember wanting Tyler Matzek, who has been almost as much of a bust as Hobgood. Jacob Turner was another name mentioned as a possibility for that pick, along with Zack Wheeler and Shelby Miller. The O's had their pick of HS pitchers and there was broad agreement that the O's needed a HS pitcher.

I wanted Matzek, no question. Wheeler was on my radar but it was not obvious that we should take him. It's not over for Hobgood. I believe. He just needs to go out there, relax, and not try to do too much
