Flash Era Coming to an End?

Flaherty is overmatched at the plate. I think that he needs glasses.

Definitely a possibility... but I trust those closest to him to be able to make that kind of assessment.

What evidence have you seen from the TV that makes you think poor eyesight is a concern?

See, that's funny. You should stay with that.

It is also a true story. I like Boog Powell's nickname best of any baseball players. He said he was going bad he wasn't sure if he heard the "g." That is a classic quote right there!:laughlol:

Unless the organization focuses more on options than logic, you have to feel like Ryan is headed out of town soon.

Lombo has outhit him and even though Ryan has more power potential, you can't keep 2 of the same type of guy with a short bench. With Machado back, bringing up a Weeks or Casilla makes even more sense.

Never understood the "flash" nick name. I thought nicknames were reserved for successful players.

Thought so.

As for your question, no idea. Buck and I don't talk. But he also hasn't shown himself to be someone whose decisions are all 100% sensible (e.g., batting Hardy in the #2 spot for the entire 2012 season, despite his .281 OBP). Maybe he just likes Flash. Or Flash is more of a known commodity in his estimation. None of that negates the fact that you've continued to sing Flaherty's praises without so much as bothering to compare his stats to Lombo's.

And the funny thing is...if you DID trouble yourself to make that comparison, your opinion might be proven to be something more than loud noises. I'm no wizard when it comes to defensive metrics. I just looked through fangraphs and saw that Lombo's career numbers seem to compare pretty well to Flaherty's. And Lombo has obviously played more than one position in the major leagues.

There is no question that Flaherty is superior defensively at every position than Lombardozzi. I've watched him for years. He can hit a little bit. And on that absolutely awful defensive team he certainly was not the worst. He is a switch hitter with no power. Who can not play shortstop at all. I like that we have him and am thilled with his minor league options. I am glad to have him in our organization. No one utilizes a Chris Davis shift against him.

Here's a clue. His last name begins with flah. Just put an 's' between the 'a' and the 'h' and you've got it. Probably has been his nickname for years.

Dating back to at least his days at Vanderbilt.

I'm still a believer in Flaherty to a certain extent but if he doesn't pick up the pace with the bat before Davis returns he could end up being the odd man out of the starting lineup, if not of the MLB roster.

Flaherty's value is not, and never has been, his bat. He was a Rule 5 guy, and it was because of his glove and his versatility that he stayed with the team and has become an extremely valuable piece. He's not going anywhere.

Exactly. You can plug him in almost anywhere and get decent D from him. Only the Maroon Squad can't figure out the value of that.

    • Didn't see today's game in it's entirety but I will say this.  I feel 100% more confident with Mateo playing second and turning  a DP rather than JH right now.  JH will be fine there.  In time.   But even forgetting his hitting, D wise he just isn't there yet.   And yes I know the metrics say he is fine.  But to me, using the eye test, he looked very shaky fielding and throwing,
    • I like Kevin.  He is constantly improving.  My only beef is that he doesn't seem to understand that a foul ball isn't always out of play.   A ball can be hit foul, but still be in the field of play.
    • My preferred day 3 WR would have been Troy Franklin, but he apparently had a bad combine on positional drills (which might have been because he had the flu.)  And he got picked by Denver pretty early.   Devontez Walker is kind of intriguing.  He's 6'2", barely.   A bit on the skinny side but ran in the mid-4.3s.  His route tree is pretty limited, mostly short quickouts/slants and go/post routes. But he's really good at the deep routes.  Sort of a discount DK.  He's reported to have good hands and good deep ball tracking ability as well.  We have to see how that translates in the pro game.
    • Adley looks way more energized and McCann is veteran catcher who is good defensively and handles the pitchers well.  Doesn't really make sense to wear Adley out when the O's are using him at the top of the lineup.
    • Just seems like a more controlled swing from the right side, shorter, flatter.
    • He was signed in the Covid year when they only had a 5 round draft, which is why he was undrafted.  Was showing promise bur tore his UCL in 2022.  Pitched a little last year, this is his first full year back.  Nice to see the good outing.
    • What's up with Brandon Young? Out of nowhere (#30 prospect above... undrafted?) he goes 3 IP with 0 hits or walks, and 7 Ks, throwing an otherworldly 26 of 31 pitches for strikes, in Bowie's game today.
