I certainly have no issues with those who don't want Buck to be a slave to the save/closer role, because he certainly is.

But, have we really reached the point where we can't ever expect a reliever to pitch 3 days in a row?  It's not like Brach was overworked beforehand.  I think that criticism is a bit overblown.

We have and it's unfortunate and ridiculous.  And it's not like we're expecting multiple innings, it's just one.  20 pitches at most.

Brach was brought in for the 3rd consecutive day, and promptly coughed up the Orioles' 4-1 lead.

NOW Castro was just brought in, and at best can keep the game at a tie and play for extra innings.

Sometimes, I really wonder what Showalter is thinking.

Steve A said this is the game thread, and I agree with him.

If Brach was demonstrably superior to anyone in the bullpen (i.e. Britton 2014 or Rivera for about 15 years), then maybe you bring him in a 3rd day in a row.

But when he is the closer because he has slightly more experience in that role than Castro and Bleier, not because of obvious superiority, why not go with someone fresher on Day 3 ???

He asked him to get a save with a 3 run lead vs a bad hitting team. This wasn’t the Yankees middle of the order in a one run game.

I understand your arguments.  I don't agree, but I understand.   But even if I concede that it's not the worst move in the world to bring him in, you have to get him out when he is struggling.

Like you say -- it was an extremely easy save on the spectrum of saves -- 3 runs lead, 1 inning, vs a weak offense.

You bring in someone else like Castro and get out of this game, then you have a rested Brach for tomorrow.

Now you have lost the game AND you don't have your putative closer tomorrow either.

If the Orioles were up by 4 runs there is zero chance Buck brings in Brach.  Well unless they've rule was changed to give a save with a 4 run lead and then there would be 100 percent chance Brach would have been brought in.

Not concerned about loss just concerned that Buck is ruining Brach's trade value.
