Orioles.com

'Sources close to the Orioles said Wednesday that club owner Peter Angelos wants to keep the ace pitcher and called Bedard last Sunday night to discuss a five-year contract. Bedard said he might be interested and would talk to his agent, Mark Pieper. '

Whether Bedard is extended or traded isn't primary the issue here.

At the heart of the matter is whether Angelos is interfering with baseball operations. Does Andy MacPhail really have full control and autonomy over baseball operations?

Ladies and gentlemen of the OH jury after this offseason concludes what will your verdict be on the charges of meddling and interference against Peter Angelos? If the verdict is guilty, what would your sentence be?

I will reserve judgment and let everything play out. In America defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately for Peter Angelos because of his track record he is presumed guilty until proven innocent in the court of public opinion.

For the sake of the Orioles franchise I hope that Angelos is innocent of these charges of meddling and interference. I hope Andy MacPhail truly is the captain of the Orioles ship, not just the chief navigator. I have a feeling that the facts will unfold in the near future. Then we will all have some serious deliberating to do.

This court is in recess.

Excellent post, perfectly stated.

MacPhail will be the first to tell you that every owner he has worked for has weighed in on major player moves be they contract signing or trades. I have read where he has said just that.

Your assumption that Peter called Bedard without MacPhail's knowledge or that it was an approach that MacPhail and Peter had not discussed is not likely to me. MacPhail said he talks to Peter often. I believe MacPhail said he talked to Peter on Sunday. I think they were probably working together on how to approach Bedard.

If the news that the Orioles might have to touch 5/100m holds any baring, it's going to totally screw the Mets with Santana

I have not seen 5/100. Someone mentioned 7/100. However, Peter is supposed to be discussing a 5 year contract which would be much less then 100.

Allegedly Pete has given Mcphail the go ahead if Bedard cant be resigned... I believe Mcphail's reply & of course it a rumor was something like I think its our best chance to be good anytime soon or something closel

Resigning Bedard would further prolong the inevitable!

I know you opinion Wildcard... I'd love to keep Bedard & Roberts & compete. With Bedard & Roberts the O's will again finish near or at the bottom of the AL East. They have too many holes SS, 1B , 3B, CF, C IMO (& Wieters is not ready in 2008) & really DH if you agree Huff, Gibbons, Millar, & Payton are has beens like I do!

Welcome to my side. I have an extra pitch fork if you'd like to wield your very own...

<img src="http://www.dixienoveltydistributors.com/webdnd/pitchfork_5.jpg">

Come on now...that's plastic. If this is indeed legit (which I doubt it is), we are going to need something much more sturdy.

That being said, I think the deal gets done soon.

I think the last sentence of the updated ESPN article says it all.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3221864

"As of Wednesday night, it looked like the hands-on owner would definitely have his say in the matter."

Does anyone really feel that AM wanted to resign Bedard?

Looks like ESPN is just regurgitating the MLB.com article from earlier this evening.

Bedard also did not comment on the continuing negotiations. "I can't say anything right now," Bedard said Monday night to the Ottawa Citizen. Previous rumors had him headed to the Toronto Blue Jays. "Sorry, I just can't [say anything]."
(from the ESPN article posted above)

Sounds like somebody told Bedard to put a sock in it for some reason.
