The "just win series" mantra counts for a lot less when your division rivals are eating away at your lead despite the whole 2/3 thing.

Eh. You win 2/3 every time, and you'll do just fine. Your division rivals aren't going to win 3/3 or even 2/3 everytime.

Of course, I'd also point out that had the Orioles actually won 2/3 in Oakland, their lead wouldn't have been eaten into at all.

(And when they win tonight, they'll still have the 4-game lead they had 10 days ago.)

Nice play by Flaherty to even get the ball hit by Trout but the reality is if Manny is there he probably gloves it, straightens up and throws a strike to first.

Flaherty's throw was online but the grass slowed it down just enough for Trout to beat it out on the hop.

That's kind of the point. It's not about "just winning series." It's about coming up big when your rivals are playing well. If they win 2/3 and the Yanks/Jays sweep a couple of teams, that's not good. If they fail to take advantage (e.g., the Oakland series) when their opponents drop games, that's not good.
