Knowing you are going to lose is not gambling.

Speaking of losing...

I think they should let the players be free agents and compensation be damned. Whether or not the teams need it is questionable, but it really is a burden on the older free agents.

If they need a compensation system, just allow compensation picks at the ends of certain rounds for any contract with a total value of $xxx. Let the AAV determine the round of compensation. For example, the top 5 AAV signings result in the former team getting a pick after the first round. Keep going by fives for the first five rounds (top 25 AAV).

The owners and players agreed to it.

It is funny, but years ago when the original suit against the owners was being filed by Marvin Miller and the players union, Charlie Finley kept insisting to all the other owners to just give ALL the players free agency every single year. Marvin Miller later wrote that this was the worst nightmare fear he had, knowing that he couldn't very well argue in public or the courts against the idea of freedom for all players, but also knowing that the prices would only go up if there were only a certain number of free agents available every year. Fortunately for the players, none of the other owners listened to Finley about much anyway and certainly not this.

If a guy has 10 years of service, let them be a FA without the comp pick attached.

Been talking with Scott Boras?

I disagree with Heyman here. These players and their agents have had all season to think about QOs. They know if they're probably going to be given one. Noone's blindsided here and needs extra time.

So, what are the odds of Nick signing elsewhere at this point?

PA must remember the Roberts deal. Several comparable 2Bs signed for much less in FA after Roberts got that deal. Shouldn't the O's let Nick shop around and then make an offer? A 4/40 is a pretty big commitment.

Nick's not getting more than 3 years from any other club. If he wants four it's the O's.

It isn't a burden on a guy to take a one year 15.3 million gurNteed contract after a career of making huge amounts of money. That is an insane amount of money for 8 months of work.
