Will Jimmy Paredes force his way onto this team?

I wouldn't be surprised if Cabrera were to become the starting LF by the All Star break. Of course, he also could show off a bad attitude and be released.

Why would we have a .572 OPS infielder stating in LF? Lough probably gets an OPS 100 points higher than Cabrera and is a known high quality in LF.

I need to see Paredes continue to hit and field well for another two weeks before I give serious consideration to keeping him over Flaherty. Have to see Cabrera in the OF a lot more before I'd keep him over Lough too. Would try to trade Matusz and Webb to make room for 6 man rotation.

Isn't Pearce the DH against LHP? Delmon starts at DH only if CD sits against lefties, and (thinking optimistically here) I don't see that happening unless he struggles as badly as last year. I see Delmon as a bench bat--maybe *occasional* starter against LHP.

No, Pearce will be in the outfield against LHP, in place of either Snider or De Aza (both left-handed hitters). That leaves Young to DH.

If Paredes could hit lefties, he could potentially platoon with either Snider or De Aza. But he can't, so it's hard to find room for him on the roster.

I don't really understand the sentiment in this thread of preferring Paredes over Lough. Lough does one thing very well -- play defense. Paredes doesn't do anything particularly well.

It's not like Paredes is clearly a better hitter, either. Lough's minor league offensive numbers are better than Paredes' (although admittedly, Lough was generally older for his level than Paredes was).

What am I missing? Is the preference for Paredes based entirely on a handful of spring training at-bats?

I dont quite understand the illogical nature either.

It appears that Lough has fallen out of flavor with some and they over evaluate Paredes ST hits.

That and 60ish at bats last year with the O's where he slugged a totally sustainable .491. I don't get it either.

OPS isn't what you'd judge him by, since his slugging will remain low. Statistically, his offense is judged on OBA and SBs. And maybe runs scored.

I'm not sure there is a preference for Paredes being expressed so much as a conversation about his chances of making the team and whom that would impact. If the Orioles want to hold onto him, they will have some interesting decisions to make.

At best it's a push: Lough and Paredes put up comparable minor league numbers. Unless you want to compare their AA ball stats only. At AAA, Paredes' OPS was .001 higher than Lough's. AAA: Lough .796 in 1,763 PAs; Paredes .797 in 1,314 PAs. As for all the discussion of Lough's speed, he's not a very good base-stealer. Paredes, in the minors was far more successful than Lough was as a basestealer.

Its not that Lough has fallen out of favor. Rather it is two or three decent players for one spot. Some prefer Lough. Others Paredes.

    • I assume you're talking about about the 3-2 fastball that got hit for a grand slam, it was the 3 batters before that Baker walked and not even being competitive, that was the low point of the season for Me. It was Baker that put him in a Jackpot.
    • Bump…the Tides are undefeated (5-0) since Holliday returned.
    • I think baseball's food concessions are largely an overpriced rip-off. The hot dog served at OPCY is the highest priced hot dog in the majors..In Miami you can get a hot dog at the park for 3 dollars. The entire price for attending a sporting event with a good seat is getting out of hand, and so is ALL entertainment. If you want a really good seat to see a top act you might have to take out a loan. Disneyland and Disney World are getting so expensive, that a middle class family of four simply is priced out of access. But back to baseball concessions. I dont eat meat, but I wouldn't buy a 9 dollar hot dog anywhere , let alone OPCY. I bring my food with me. It's the last line of affordability we're going to have in attending a ball game. Concession prices are unfair, but at least you can eat before the game...or  bring your own water and peanuts. Otherwise it's a shame...and it's wrong.
    • I don't know what got into him. I wonder if he made an adjustment or someone helped "fix" something..
    • I'd rather a thread by Roy saying that we should cut him now. The reverse jinx works both ways, so I think this thread is a biiiiiig mistake. That said, he was so good this series. Love that for him. On a broader point, this org does something right that's beyond the talent in the room. I assume it's advance scouting our opponents and preparation, but we're a step above.
    • It does tend to have the lowest (out the door) prices but buyer beware a bit. We used them for Opening Day and it was a bit of a debacle (the first private seller never delivered, then they got us a second “preferred seller” that also never delivered, and then FINALLY came through with a third “preferred seller” that came through, albeit it took more than a few minutes). Dealing with all of this, while waiting on hold, and missing the start of Opening Day festivities definitely sucked and made for a stressful situation.  But, yesterday, for just me, for a matinee game in which the out the door price was $9 and I was already going to be arriving midway through the 1st inning, it worked great. So it might just depend on your situation, but like I said, buyer beware.
