The riots in '68 occurred at the very beginning of the baseball season. I remember reading that the O's first home game (I'm not sure if it was actually opening day) was played in the waning days of the rioting.
I looked it up, couldn't depend on my memory.

The Orioles played the Senators in RFK, and this was when they was also rioting in DC because of Kent State incident.

Hmmm...maybe I should have looked it up as opposed to going on memory :D

My own opinion here, obviously, but by canceling the games essentially you are giving in to terrorism. And make no mistake about it, what is happening in the city is a small form of terrorism right now...in my opinion.

NY was forced to make similar decisions on 9-11, and that was far worse damage and loss of life.

That sounds nice until you consider that a mob of "kids" are what started yesterday's violence.

Spot on. The "kids" rioted after school was dismissed yesterday. So today, schools are closed and the "kids" now have all day long to go "shopping".

What a brilliant plan by the city government.

Good luck, I suspect armed National Guard personal will make a deterrent.

You make a strong point.

However, I don't think that there is any way that the Orioles can have fans attend a home game with a curfew in effect. There are traffic and logistical issuesin various parts of the city because of the rioting. Most importantly, I think that the city needs to be more secure before you even entertain the idea of having fans downtown to attend the game. If MLB needs to play the games because of scheduling concerns, playing in an empty stadium or moving the games to DC or Philly seems to be the best options.

Yes, but there was not the same kind of immediate threat of further violence. I certainly look forward to seeing baseball resume and a small healing moment for the city.

I would be inclined to PPD for today, then if the streets are clear today and overnight, to do a day game tomorrow. Then figure out how and where to make up the games. Looks like both teams have an off day on 5/4. Nothing else as far as I can see until the All Star break, then both have an off day on 8/6.

I was thinking the same thing haha. Hey kids, come to the Yards for free today! (WBAL reports OPACY has been set ablaze!) :P

I think a majority of the kids got caught up by the emotions and followed the thugs/hooligans that started the mess.

Of course, that doesn't excuse or condone what they did.

You seen similiar kids get caught up on college campuses and destroy property after a bad loss or big win.

My friend from the SSA is being sent home at 1 PM. They say out of an abundance of caution. I know they have a rumor on social media of more kids going to Security Mall and destroying it. Hopefully, just someone talking.

Hopefully wrong, like the rumor yesterday about the gangs getting together to harm law enforcement, now they are claiming publically, that they never said such a thing and there was no pact.

    • I wondered if Hays would have had the arm to throw out the runner McKenna couldn't last night. Let's not go crazy - I think Hays might be playing his way to flirting with a non-tender this winter with the high age 25-27 performance and a shaky looking age 29 outlook but plenty of clubs would be happy to have him as a lineup regular.      With the watered down postseason, the Orioles look like they will have fair chances to play some Octobers, and if you weight a championship season's midpoint at July 15 instead of July 1, Hays' 2025 final Arb year would slide to age 30. The best 6th starter, best 4th outfielder, best 5th infielder are all part of competing to be the best, but it is peculiar to have just a couple trustworthy relievers.
    • Fair enough, but I guess I just don't see how the title of Wildcard's post erodes the credibility of the thread or forums.  While it could have been read in different ways, it actually fit what Wildcard was going for and I can't really ding him for that. I've seen seriously misleading titles and changed them, but in this case, I case we'll just have to agree to disagree. On top of it all, Wildcard, as a 20 year plus member here, will always get some leeway from us. He's an OG.
    • If Mateo is hurt, then yes I would prefer Mayo get the call then to go with Urias. If Mateo can play, then he should be manning 2B regularly.
    • I said this is the game thread this morning "The craziest thing is I don't normally yell during games because I can just type out my frustrations here. But without it, my expletive laced shouting at McKenna for making such an off line throw (after taking three steps), knowing Santander would have most likely made a better throw just annoyed me to no end.  That's the second time McKenna as a defensive replacement has not worked." I hope when Hays gets back we can end the McKenna era for a bit. He's hit a little bit off lefties, I give you that, but he such a poor instinctual baseball player and that's obviously not going to change.
