Exactly. And signing Cruz would have meant no Young or Snider and probably not picking up De Aza. Wow. Seems like a dumb move not signing Cruz, doesn't it? Some treat the Orioles payroll like their personal piggybank and are just cheap. I would have given Cruz the extra year even if the guy barely was able to walk at that point.

"Jake had more chances than my ex wife"-Earl Weaver (kidding of course)

Miller is a lot of money for a reliever but he is a REALLY good reliever as you can see.

No. Signing Cruz would have been indefensible. Literally a GM litmus test.

Simon is the one Im baffled by. He was even pretty good in Baltimore.

Alfredo Simon? The guy who was 8-12, 5.18, and about 6 K/9, and 3 BB/9 as an Oriole? And that mostly as a reliever. His "good" year with 17 saves included an ERA of nearly 5.00. Not a kid either, he was 30 when the O's let him go. And here's his transaction log prior to going to Cincy:

He was a mediocre journeyman, no more, no less.

I know Cruz just hit a three run homer, and is on the cusp of leading for the triple crown, but his APL rating clearly show that come June 1st he is going to be in a hitting slump, his IBS ratings show he will hit only 1 home run in July, and his IUP data indicate that on the 4th year of his contract he will be out of baseball. I love the Angelos apologists that keep telling us we don?t miss Cruz. Clearly I don?t understand the ?salary structure? of this organization. All I can say to the stat geeks and apologists is do you really think we are better team without Cruz?

I wanted to resign Cruz. And I would have been wrong. Call someone a name again and you are gone.

Pretty much only Jack could do that,

You can't sign a 34-year-old DH coming off a career year to a big long term deal at face value. You have to have some kind of inside scouting information or something about eyesight or health or something that says "this guy isn't just going to buck trends, he's going to buck trends in a Barry Bonds alien life form kind of way" to offer a contract like that.

Stats have said that Miguel would make Didi Gregorius look like Cruz for years.

Sign 20 guys coming off career years at 34 and you'll be bitterly disappointed in at least 19 of them. Sure, the Orioles miss a guy who got an indefensible contract and is playing far, far, far better than even the Mariners' most insane dreams could have imagined.

LOL. Are the terms stat geek and apologist really grounds for banning?

The Third Reich wasn't this uptight. Hope that doesn't get me banned.

We aren't talking about 20 guys though. We are talking about one in particular: Nelson Cruz. That is why you pay GM's the big bucks-to not just arbitrarily sign every free agent who is 30+. Cruz was worth the extra year despite the fact he probably wouldn't have been playing much that year.

Just my two cents.

I have asked that folks not call folks that here before. And I have asked that they not use negative epithets. No. Using them is not grounds for banning. Using them after I ask that you find other terms is. And the German thing is absolutely not cool. Anywhere. Lose that and you will do better in life.

Why did no other GM other than Jack agree with you?

    • Here's a trivia question nobody is going to get unless you have Stathead: Gunnar Henderson is 2nd in modern Orioles history ('54-present) in OPS in a player's first 208 career games. Can you name the other five in the top six? If you need a hint or two, two are active, and none are in the Hall of Fame. Side note: there have only been 62 players who started their career with the Orioles and played at least the next 208 games with the team.
    • Wonder when we’ll see him again. I’m thinking it might be in 2025. If he comes up for expanded rosters, I don’t see him playing. Hopefully he can improve and be ready for his next chance in the show.
    • I'm fine with 18" mitts if our guys get them too. What bothers me is no rule and then the mitts get longer and longer. Make it the same size for everyone and I'm good.
    • Yep. It'll take him about 1650ish games to get there. Not that I expect Gunnar to continue to post 6.9 WAR per 162, but for now he's almost 2 wins per full season ahead of Harper. Harper is still an interesting case, where he has two actual MVP awards, but only one year where he was a no-doubt MVP. And a lot of seasons with injury or under-performance. Six seasons of less than three wins. More valuable in '15 than in '16-18 combined. 2021 he was certainly good, but arguably not as good as Gunnar's '23. Or 5-6 other NL players from '21.
