I dont follow college football, so I can't begin to tell you, if this is an upgrade, or the best man for the top.

But, I don't get, Maryland saying they want to improve their offense as top priority, and then bring in a defense guy as the Head Coach.

Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin was named the new head coach of the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday.

Durkin was attractive to Maryland, a source said, because of his fire and passion, recruiting prowess and lineage to Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh.

Durkin's offensive plans would likely fit along the lines of Ohio State's spread-power attack, as Maryland leadership had made it clear offensive improvement was paramount.

I get what your saying but just because you have a defensive minded head coach doesn't mean you can't have a great offense. Look at the 2000 Ravens, Billick an "offensive genius" that guided one of the best defenses in history. This guy is a good recruiter that will hire the right people to get the job done on offense. From everything I'm reading, this move is getting rave reviews throughout football. Now let's see what happens with Mike Locksley.

From what I understand, he's a great recruiter! Look at the coaches that hired him and who likes him. This guy is a rising star and although he has a defensive background, I think he's respected enough to go out and get the right staff to compliment him. I hope they allow him to make the decision on his staff though. If he chooses Locksley and Locksely wants to come back (I read he's a bit butt hurt right now) then great, but if he wants to bring in someone else, then he should be allowed to do so. If the guy is as good a recruiter as they say, even if he misses out on some of these Locksley guys he should be able to make up for it next year!

I think had a strong DC that he allow to run the defense.

I hear what you are saying, just between he thinks defense, doesn't mean, he can't have a good offense.

But, I think its easier for an Offense DC come in and do a good job, then a Defense DC come in and having a great offense. I think most cases in history will back this up.

It really depends on how they rated him. Maybe the best offensive hire they could make was only a 3 star hire, and this guy they rated as a 5 star hire. You have to go with him.

I think it is true that defensive first hires are becoming more of a risk, because the game is moving towards such an offensive model. B.C. led the ACC in defense this year and went winless in the conference. If Alabama plays Clemson or OU, I'm not confident in them holding those teams under 30. The game is less about "can you stop the other team" and more about "can you answer." Defense is also less about scheme and more about talent. There's really no defensive example of Oregon under Chip Kelly or Mike Leach. Although maybe Michigan State might be?

But with that said, taht doesn't mean it can't work. LSU, Alabama, Michigan State, they are all big time programs that are defense first. Ohio State a few years ago under Tressel was defense first. And there's really no reason why he can't turn over the offense to somebody. Especially if UA is willing to shell out money to allow them to lure an offensive guy.

I guess at the end of the day it really doesn't matter if you are defensive minded or offensive minded when being the head coach. It depends on whether you can recruit, handle game time situations, and hire good coordinators.

I'm a die hard Michigan fan.

I'll say this: Durkin is as intense a guy as you're gonna get on the sideline. He's passionate and he's extremely plugged in with recruiting circles. He will 100% recruit his hindquarters off and he will also immediately improve MD's defense.

He's a very good hire.

I haven't paid as much attention to the football team as I do basketball, but watching the mlb hot stove on Twitter and the MD/UCONN game, I can't help but see all these coaching hires by the football staff.

They have also recently added former UVA Head coach Mike London, former Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer, one of Alabama's top recruiting men in Aazaar Abdul-Rahim...in addition to word that Mike Locksley will return in some capacity. A recruiting all star team of coaches...and the players and recruits seem to love it. Lots of positive tweets out there.

Sounds good to me. Making the younger Diggs is reconsider.

    • Nice.  Burnes is pretty cutter heavy too.  Gotta love when these reliever types just come out of nowhere.
    • He had a 777 OPs vs righties last year and just under 900 the year before.  Right now, the struggles are nothing more than a SSS. That said, he was terrible vs lefties his first season. You wonder if he has concentrated more on hitting lefties vs righties?
    • You know what, I actually mess that up.  I always say at bats and that’s really not right..it should be PA but anyway, my threshold is more of a games started type of thing. for me, the Os only have 1 everyday player and that’s Gunnar.  Everyday being defined as 155+ games. Adley, being a C, should rest (as in a full game off) more often imo. After that, it just varies. I think yon could say a guy playing 135 games is an everyday guy.  I’m not trying to nitpick on semantics.  I look at it more as, take away PA from someone.     I have said I think this will be one of, if not the best, year of Mounty’s career. I don’t want him sitting too much but I don’t see anything wrong with saying he’s a 550ish PA guy vs 650ish. Now, if he’s on fire and hitting all pitching, that plan can obviously be altered but the current plan for me would be to target 550ish PA..so, 135-140 games.  It’s not a huge difference but you do that with him, with Santander and with Hays and all flan sudden, you find a bunch of at bats for a young hitter with bigger upside.     That’s really what all of this is about.  I have never once said I want Cowser and Kjerstad playing everyday. They aren’t Gunnar.  They aren’t Holliday or Mayo either, 2 other guys I expect to be true everyday guys. But they can play 135-140 games, just like Mounty and be really good imo.   Right now, there are vet bats here stopping that. For me, I’m looking for ways to get the bats in the young guys hands as much as possible and I don’t feel sacrificing at bats from a good but not great player is some tragic way of doing that.
    • So Willson Contreras has a broken forearm because catcher's are now moving up on the plate to try and frame/steal pitches.  JD Martinez (who stands way far back in the box), crushed him, swinging a pitch. If it was automated strikes, there would be no reason for him to stay so far up and this wouldn't have happened.  I know this is a weird outlier, but I thought it interesting nonetheless.
    • We are used to essentially GG level defense at every position except for RF on a nightly basis.  If you think the board panics after every blown bullpen lead, wait till you see us lose games because of errors.  We haven't seen that really in 3 years.  Outside of one game one offs with Mckenna and O'Hearn.
    • I'd say Adley's splits vs RHP are far more troubling. His job isn't threatened though so I guess it is not a developing situation?
    • Spot on.  We're also getting everyone's best shot this year, and I'm sure pitcher's didn't want a 21 year old teeing off on them.  So that little bit of competitive extra motivation means alot at this level.  He wasn't flying under the radar in the 9th spot.   With that said, would he see better pitches hitting 2nd in between Gunnar and Adley?  Pitchers wont have that luxury of facing him at the bottom of the lineup where they can drop in their ungodly breaking stuff on the corners.
