Interesting that a guy with the stuff that Magnifico was only ranked #30 coming off his strong AA season and not ranked at all in last year's Baseball America Prospect Handbook.    Can't we leverage our international slots any better than this?

BA didn't rank Mancini isn the top 100 prospects.  How is that working for them.

Minor League relievers are not ranked high very often.

Dan cares about salary.   The Brewers took Drake  532k salary and got Magnifico who has a option and is probably paid out an 85K in the minors.  To even it out Dan added a international slot bonus that is worth 880K.   But to use hit the Brewers has to lay out the money.  It was a financial transactions  more than anything where both side got was they wanted.

O;s got rid on salary and add an optionable pitcher.

Brewers got at international slot bonus and a reliever they might be about to use.

Multiple choice test:

Over the last 3 months:

-- Pitchers added to the organization:  Bleier,  Ynoa, Asher, Magnifico, Castro, Andrew Faulkner

--  Pitchers subtracted from the organization:  Drake, Gunkel, TJ McFarland, Tomo Okha, possibly Garcia

-- Collateral damage:  an international signing slot

-- Some cash/PTBNLs going in both directions, that we don't know enough to evaluate

Did I forget any pitchers coming or going?

Net result:

   A.  Not much, none of these guys will amount to anything one way or the other

B:  The guys we have gotten have more potential to help us than the guys we got rid of

   C.  We're worse off

We also added Nuno.

See, that is something I like to talk about.

It is an option. To spend 880k.

If you want to. It's not 880. Not close. You would assume that you are getting something of value. And paying for it. Since you are now permitted to. It's like a seat license.

This is similar to the Castro move. We're replacing low ceiling guys with high upside arms. DD is always tinkering and trying to make incremental upgrades.

Norfolk and Bowie are stacked with quality depth arms. We're just missing the high end starting pitching prospects. Hopefully that's Harvey and Sedlock later this year.

We could really use one who throws a 97 fastball with a sharp sinking action. He would only need to pitch one inning per game.

Big difference between top 100 in baseball in not in one club's top 30 prospects.   Since there are 30 teams, you could make the argument that Magnifico is not ranked in the top 700-1,000 prospects in baseball according to BA.   Sure, he could turn into something.   Just like Richard Rodriguez could turn into something.     I'm not saying he's not worth acquiring.    We just traded a slot worth 198K to get the LHP Fry.    Not sure why the 880K slot gets us about the same type of relief prospect, maybe worse.    I also understand that it's just as much about getting rid of those slots since we aren't going to be using them anyway.

Not sure I understand your reasoning on Drake's salary verses Magnifico.   Drake only gets 532K if he's in the majors same as Magnfico would.   They both earn about the same in the minors.    How are we saving salary if Drake wasn't going to be on the 25 man roster anyway?

That is not how it works.  When the O's put Drake on the team to start the season his major league salary became guaranteed because he is out of options.   Even if he passed through waivers and was outrighted to Norfolk he gets his major league salary.  The only way for the O's to get out from under his salary is to trade him.  Which they did.

Same thing happened last year to with Roe and Phillips but they passed through waivers and received their major league salary at Norfolk.

This situation is a joke.  Drake has a 1.64 ERA in 11 IP with Milwaukee.  Plus he has a 15/6 K/BB ratio.  I get that he had no options but he was pitching well for us after a terrible ST.  Buck never had faith in him despite him being really good for us down the stretch last year, good overall MLB numbers and great MILB numbers.

We turned Drake and our top international draft slot into a 9th round pick.
