Regarding playing for .500, in Moneyball Billy Beane said the samething, paraphrasing "you are either contending or rebuilding, no middle ground".

He has also changed on this.  If you notice, he hasn't completely rebuilt in awhile.

I think the answer here with this move and with the associated moves is that the Orioles will truly turf the next two seasons. spending nothing, and acquiring little other than through markets and sell -offs of any performing assets.

Roger that.

To answer your question, our one-one draft pick! :D

Reading that article posted earlier about his rise in Houston I don't think he hires anyone. Question is what remaining players will he trade off. It said his TOTAL commitment was to moves that made sense in the long run. Damn the fans and the record. No playing for .500 to appease them while rebuilding. Bad record only nets more one-ones.

I see one or two more REALLY bad years for the O's. Then our newly revamped minor league system starts cranking out MLers. THEN we acquire one or two good ML FAs and win a World Series.

Really other than Cobb, Bundy,  Givens, Castro, Cashner, Villar and maybe Nunez do we even have any major league quality players on the roster?  Do you think fans would care if any of those players get traded?  And Cashner's and Cobb's salaries probably make it hard to trade them.

I think someone asked about Dauer rejoining the Orioles somewhere in this thread.

Dauer retired following the 2017 championship season, a decision he made prior to undergoing emergency surgery for a blood clot to his brain caused by a fall in his bathroom. He expressed interest yesterday in getting back into baseball and rejoining the team that brought him to the majors in 1976. The only organization he knew as a player.

“The one place that I want to come back to is Baltimore. I’ve been trying to get back there since 1986. For 43 years I’ve been fortunate enough to have a job, and nothing’s ever worked either way or whatever.”

I am sure they could find some position for him with the team.

Ha, first time I was in London I took a pic of that and found the Ziggy Stardust cover (and of course Abbey Road)

I would like to think that the generality of this is accurate while being factually misleading.  I think all of us understand that we are not going to win for at least several years and we should expect to see lower payroll and lower investments into ML roster. However, even if there are no additions say to the rotation or for defensive specialists...there is no question that investments will be needed in infrastructure or turning around a franchise that is behind virtually everywhere except in the stadium it plays in.  Spending nothing and acquiring little?   I think overall this is unworkable and will prove untrue.  We'll see.  There is much to be done. and simply reducing overhead will not fix the mess.  Investments will be made or the madness will continue.  IMHO.

I agree.

So far the AngelBros have shown a willingness to reduce payroll and overhead expenses. Then they need to complete and announce the hiring of a capable professional, and stay out of the way as he makes hiring decisions. After that, we'll see how willing the AngelBRos are at spending money in the many areas where this team needs to invest if it's going to compete in the future.
