Speaking for myself, I don’t look much at batting average.   Take Wynns for example.   .233 BA isn’t necessarily terrible for a backup C, but a .283 OBP/.256 SLG is definitely terrible.    That said, I was surprised to see Wynns sent down based on 47 plate appearances.    I thought they’d give him another month.

It's not just the hitting. The guy was also really poor defensively. He had issues blocking balls in the dirt, couldn't throw out runners, etc.. The only positive thing about Wynns was that he had a really good rapport with Bundy behind the plate. I don't think a roster spot should be wasted on a personal catcher for a bottom of the rotation starter but that might just be me.

In 6 starts last year with Sisco behind the plate, Bundy threw to a 2.36 ERA.   I think he’ll survive without Wynns.

I'm just curious what this site wants as an acceptable batting average. Seems like if anyone is hitting under .300, they need to be DFA'ed or sent down.

I don't think a majority of the posters think that way.

Also this team is not trying to win, fans need to accept there are going to be players that should be in the minor leagues getting significant playing time this year.

I don't look at batting average except in passing.  I'm more worried about wOBA.

I mean if a guy can hit for power and get on base, do we really care how many singles he hits?  If a guy hits a ton of singles but has no power and doesn't walk should we be impressed with his 320 BA?

I didn't realize "this site" was supposed to have a collective opinion or that in this age there was such a thing as an "acceptable batting average."

You... shall never be invited to the Hanser Alberto Fanclub meetings.

Well, as of this season.  Yes!

If I am having a hard time with some of these threads. I see people saying that Sisco can’t catch and can’t hit and Mullins is a platoon player. We all know what the numbers say, but if there’s one advantage to being terrible, it’s that we have the opportunity to see if Sisco and Mullins can prove otherwise. Sisco has a legitimate pedigree as a former top 100 prospect and while Tony has explained why the odds may now be stacked against him, perhaps player development under Elias and Sig will result in improved performance. If it doesn’t result in improved performance, that’s okay too because the difference between losing 95 and 105 games is inconsequential and we’ll have a better understanding of what Sisco and Mullins are (or are not) as players.

But Broxton is better than Mullins was supposed to be...

    • Too many eggs in one basket for me.  Usually you either go quantity or quality.  This feels like both quality and quantity.  You are trading away 3 possibly 4 guys that can go directly into their starting lineup.  You never see a 4 for 1 with that much major league ready guys.  It usually 1 or 2 major league guys then a few lottery tickets with some upside.   Cease got you one major league ready prospect, a 21 year old decent pitcher in AA, A young toolsy outfielder in A ball and a 29 year old relief pitcher in the majors.
    • I'm going to disagree because I don't think hit for average is considered an "elite athlete" tool.  Elly De La Cruz is an elite athlete, so was Bubba Starling.  Mateo is an Elite athlete. You can be an elite athlete and still not be a good ML player.
    • I think when people say "elite athlete" about a baseball player, they mean that someone has the proverbial five tools--hit for average, hit for power, run, throw, field.   Someone like (say) Ronald Acuna Jr. or Gunnar Henderson.    Obviously there are great baseball players who never had all five tools (Frank Thomas) and players who were elite athletes who could have been better had they mastered other skills such as plate discipline (Adam Jones).   The "five tools" framework means that most catching prospects, including Basallo, will never be considered to be elite athletes, because they lack top-grade speed.   And it's rare that you would hear a pitcher described as an "elite athlete".
    • They are not going to trade Holliday for one starter.  They need a couple of bullpen arms before a starter.
    • It's closer than the vote totals seem to indicate IMO.  I honestly wouldn't be against it because I do think Crochet is top shelf talent.  And it does cash out some strong/buried assets too. I landed on appreciating what Cowser adds all around vs. questioning the bump he'd provide for 2024.
    • If Skubal is truly on the table, I’m definitely of the mindset to give up one of the big three as a trade centerpiece. For me, that’s Holliday given the potential of Mayo slotting at 3B and Westy moving back to 2B. Skubal is exactly what we need to go win a WS this year.
    • Where's @DirtyBird to downvote everyone that's saying 2/3 is fine? I hate Oakland.  Hate, hate, hate Oakland.  Every year it seems that they give us fits for no good reason, especially in their place.  And @Frobbythat's not an invite for you to go do research and be like "well, actually" if I'm wrong.   I can't name 5 players on their team and I'm sure they'll give us fits this weekend.  But I see Brent Rooker is still on the team.  If he doesn't have 5 homers and 20 RBI against us this weekend, I'll be surprised.
