Until a few minutes ago I had never heard of Chandler Shepherd. I’ve looked at Norfolk stats several times over the past few weeks and totally managed to ignore him.

Are the Orioles serious about calling him up? Shepherd is getting shelled this year. his ERA at Norfolk and Pawtucket is 8.39 with a 1.99 WHIP. Why not give Straily another chance first. He is putting up respectable numbers at Norfolk.

Yep. They are calling him up.

Smith left the game with an injury last night. Perhaps an IL move is soon.

It looked pretty bad.  Dr Ruz thinks he's probably out for the season.  Tough luck for Smith, but he's proven himself as a 4th/5th OFer - a legit Major Leaguer.

He's below replacement level.  He'll be lucky to get a job in the majors next year.  He's lucky tanking is in vogue.

Overly harsh but true.

Which one is it though? How can he be overly harsh but yet true in his assessment that Smith is a below replacement level player.

WAR: -0.7
oWAR: 0.1
dWAR: -1.1
Slash: .238/.293/.415/.708
EV: 47th percentile
Hit Hard %: 55th percentile
Spring speed: 35th percentile
xwOBA: 18th percentile
xBa: 28th percentile
xSLG: 23rd percentile
OOA: 2nd percentile
Outfielder jump: 6th percentile

The numbers say Smith is a little above replacement level as a hitter, but one of the worse defensive outfielders in baseball. He doesn't hit enough to be a DH, so what you have is potential NL PH/5th outfielder.

He was a guy worth a shot, but the numbers suggest he only proved he's an awful defensive outfielder (like Trumbo bad) with a barely acceptable bat as a 4th/5th outfielder. If Smith brought defensive skills you could live with the bat a bit in a 4th outfielder role, but he was evaluated and found to not be of major league quality unfortunately.

Lol, I was trying to agree.  There were 2 other sentences in COC's post - just thought they were a bit harsher than needed - not a big deal.
