The problem with the union is that is it is selfish. They should be paying attention to the younger guys instead they focus on maximizing dollars for the older guys, which creates(and quite accurately, I might add) the perception that the wealthy ball players care about nothing but themselves.

There are several solutions, none of which will be of interest to the union because it doesn’t involve helping themselves, it involves helping others, and they are too selfish to entertain that idea.

The Union leadership is made up of more tenured players.  It is to be expected that the moves they make would favor players such as themselves.  That's how almost everything works, people want things that help them.  It is only selfish in the sense that all of humanity acts selfishly.

You think the owners aren't selfish?

And yes, I see your point, the tenured players set the rules, or at least the goals. And they benefit them of course, not a minor leaguer or someone in arb years, but there ya go. That's the way of the world.

I don’t disagree with that at all, but it’s the problem. The solution is to care about the guys in the minors, the fringe major leaguers, and not incite an extra 20 million for the elite players.

start FA sooner, have minimum salaries for minor leaguers provide room and board during ST, lots of things can be done that will help the overall environment including excellent image improvement, even if the elite guys don’t get any extra money and that’s the only solution.

That is not the solution to the problems facing the guys in charge of the Union.  They want Adam Jones to get a better contract.

The owners are selfish of course but that’s the nature of ownership.

The PLAYERS don’t care about other players. Minor leaguers aren't even members. And the MLBPA doesn’t give a damn about them. That’s the problem. The elite members only care about themselves but if they’d care about others things could get accomplished. And I’m not a communist, or a socialist for that matter. I’m actually pretty conservative. But until the people in power start considering the needs of others nothing meaningful will happen.

Adam Jones had a better contract. Two of them in fact. And what he got this season is what a team was willing to pay. No team is handing out huge contracts anymore because they see that it’s stupid.

The union can’t change that truth.

So they have to help the younger players get paid sooner and that means, among other things, helping the minor leaguers.

No team is?

I don't think Dwight Smith or Steve Wilkerson should stand in the way of giving regular at bats to DJ Stewart and Anthony Santander the rest of the season.  I don't think there's quite as much urgency to giving Hays at bats yet, but I'm hoping he keeps hitting at Norfolk and forcing the issue.

This. Only way Smith is cut. Say August 1? After the dust settles. Maybe 8-15 ish?

Wilkerson is too valuable (to this lowly team at least...) because he can play ANYwhere and can at least hit a little.

There are exceptions to every rule, but the whole reason the guys are up in arms these days is because teams weren’t falling all over them selves to give Dallas Keuchel $100 million.

There were lots and several and many guys who were expecting huge contracts but didn’t get them, Because huge contracts are stupid. Manny got his because he still very young. And there’s a possibility it will pay off throughout the entire length of the contract, But I can sure list a whole bunch of guys who signed huge contracts that the team regrets.

Instead of protecting those contracts, the union should be looking In other directions. They won’t… But they should.

It would be interesting to see a side-by-side comparison of Ryan Flaherty and Mr. Wilkerson.

I think Wilkerson is probably the better all-around player, But I would imagine that it is pretty close
