Is Keegin Akin a ML-caliber starting pitcher?

There is a chance, when he has his good stuff, he looks like a solid #4/5. But the quality of stuff he carries from game to game varies throughout the season and he doesn't have the feel at this point to battle through when he doesn't have good stuff.

Has Keegan Akin's secondary stuff noticeably improved from last year/beginning of this season? It's been talked about that he's been directed to work on it so I'm curious. He's leading the International League in SOs.

Any prospect that could be next year's Santander? A kind of forgotten about fringe prospect that makes an impact.

I don’t think the secondary stuff has really improved much at this point, velocity has been up at times, he’s been throwing secondaries more, which equals more walks and more Ks.

Tanner Scott is my answer for the second question, he’s been inconsistent in the majors, but he leads the International League in FIP (40+ innings pitched).

We know about the obvious guys that will be added to the 40-man to be protected from the Rule V Draft but who do you think are the players most likely to be left off the 40-man and taken in the Rule V Draft? Will guys like Nick Vepsi and Zach Muckenhirn be exposed?

Muckenhirn or Peralta or Fenter or Felix Bautista are probably the most likely to get left off and taken although I think it’s probably not likely anyone gets taken in the MLB phase.

Who is your favorite prospect at each position in the system as of today (including starting & relief pitcher)?  Not necessarily who you think has the highest upside, just simply who are “your guys,”  similar to how you evaluate players in the draft.  Thanks!

I might have forgot someone, I put guys with relief risk in relief because of the number of #5 SP profile guys who wouldn't fit well in relief.

SP - DL Hall

SP - Grayson Rodriguez

SP - Zac Lowther

SP - Bruce Zimmermann

SP - Drew Rom

Swingman - Alex Wells

RP - Blaine Knight

RP - Gray Fenter

RP - Cody Sedlock

SU - Keegan Akin

SU - Dean Kremer

CL - Michael Baumann

C - Adley Rutschman

1B - Ryan Mountcastle

2B - Rylan Bannon

SS - Darell Hernaiz

3B - Gunnar Henderson

RF - Yusniel Diaz

CF - Zach Watson

LF - Kyle Stowers

DH - Josue Cruz?

Backup C - Brett Cumberland

4th OF - Ryan McKenna

Utility IF - Adam Hall

Super Utility - Toby Welk

Really interesting to me that you have Kremer behind Lowther, Zimmerman and Rom. I assume that's the case with him as a SU and the others as starters.

Nope, I don’t, did you read the note at the top? Kremer fits better in relief than those other three. I have Kremer ahead of all of them ranking wise.

Ahh. Makes sense, but I doubt the O's would operate that way in reality. Given that this hypothetical is about guys who never have been in the majors yet, I know you weren't really dealing with a real roster project moving forward, just a placement of this subset of players, so I get it.

So you are saying a 5 beats a 1 and a 2 at SS.

He has said that Adam Hall looks like a second baseman, Dan Connolly's scout in The Athletic said the same thing.

And Gunnar Henderson may well outgrow shortstop.

Henderson is according to a couple scouts who’ve seen him live, a better fit at 3B. Hernaiz is not the best chance to be a MLB SS, there is a bunch of risk there, but this (per the question) is a fantasy list, so in my fantasy, Hernaiz reaches his ceiling which is higher than Hall. It’s not to be mistaken for a prospect ranking.

    • I'll be honest, the playoffs didn't put me in a happy mood and reading this board has only made it worse.  The amount of people, many well respected, with over the top, outrageous takes calling guys "losers" and "chokers" etc. is ridiculous imo.  This reads more like a football board than a baseball board, and that's not a compliment. I'm kind of at a loss for what they should do to be honest.  The 2nd half drop-off imo is mostly explained by the injuries, particularly on the mound, and Adley's inexplicable performance.  If they were to run the team back with some minimal upgrades to the rotation and pen, sans Burnes and Santander, I think that's a team that could/should win 95ish games and compete for the division.  But there's downside there too.  And if you get Adley of the 2nd half, then you might be looking more at 85ish wins and missing the playoffs. However, I see a lot of schizophrenic and illogical takes on the board.  A lot of people are calling for a "veteran hitter" for the lineup; many of those same people are all too happy to let Santander walk.  Some are calling to not just "hand jobs to young guys;" many of these people were the loudest in demanding more aggressive promoting of prospects. I'm just generally down on the tenor of the board, and personally, I don't have any crazy strong feelings about what I think the O's should or should not do, which is fairly unusual for me.
    • The Phillies are profitable.  The Mets and the Padres are the only two teams that have really done aggressive “deficit-spending” in pursuit of a ring in the last few years.
    • If someone pays Burnes 400 mil or anything close. I think there are owners out there that haven't learned anything and have more money that brains. Don't get me wrong - Burnes is a good pitcher but that's it he is a good pitcher that will turn 30 next year. I believe the calculus for paying 30ish starting pitchers of value is changing. I believe - regardless of Boras - shorter terms and higher average annuals will be in play. So to me, 4/120 isn't a stupid prediction. Guess we shall see.
    • There is NOTHING preventing the Orioles of signing any player to a serious contract. Especially considering we have signed ZERO since Chris Davis way back in what 2015? That was almost a decade ago. We have been operating in a non-serious manner for too long when it comes to the org’s on field investment.  Teams that don’t spend don’t win World Series. Look at the last 20 years of the game. The Astros first World Series is the only team who wasn’t too half of the league who won a championship.
    • Some owners spend and want to win (Mets, Padres, Phillies). Some are more interested in making money (Rays, Guardians, etc). If Rubenstein is a profits based owner (has to make money year after year like JA) vs an investment style o lever (accepts some years May come with a loss or small net gain) then we (the fans) will be screwed. We will be akin to the Rays who are content with being “good”. But they are never willing to do what it takes to be good enough. I hope Rubenstein and everyone associated with the business or the Orioles paid a lot of attention to all of the empty seats for playoff games. That is evidence of a fanbase/market place who is not fully engaged.  The onus is on the Orioles to give people a compelling reason to come out and spend money especially in this economy. And it cannot just be hey look we have a winning team. The franchise must do more including investing in the on field product (in terms of committed dollars like every other serious franchise who is trying to win a championship).
    • My recollection is that MLB has rules about how much debt teams are allowed to take on and how much money owners are allowed to infuse into their franchises.   They supposedly won't approve contracts if they think a contract will cause them to exceed these thresholds.
    • Yeah like Tony T but Tony has the ability to foul pitches at will.  I want Cowser to be more like @waroriole’s Rob Refsnyder and Holliday to be Steven Kwan.  Is that too much to ask of number one picks?  But I love Cowser and most of everything he brings.
