Seems like a guy who might get claimed.    If another team had DFA'd him we would probably be picking him up.

I don’t know.   He has a live arm, but isn’t young, is relatively inexperienced for his age and performed poorly in his brief major league stints.    I was a bit surprised he was our choice to be DFA but hopefully he’ll slip through.

They also made him do the met and great at the B & O musuem. He went to the University of Virginia and is really smart.Said after baseball would finish his degree in kinesiology..

Yeah, he impressed me at the Q&A at the other event. I have a friend who knew him at UVA and described him as very un-jockish.

Expecting a deluge of posts about how letting a hard thrower with poor control go.

To which I reply:

Note the forlorn look in his eyes.  This must have been taken shortly after the Griffey homer.  Poor Brad just couldn't ever find the strike zone.

Pennington entered and threw two pitches. The first, a wild pitch, allowed a run to score. The second, Griffey's homer, brought three runs to the plate. Oates sent Pennington to the showers and O's fans responded by showering the young Indiana native with boos.

"I was booing too," said Pennington. "We worked so hard to get the 6-3 lead, those fans have the right to boo."

The O's demoted Pennington to the minor leagues the following day.

As for Griffey, the 24-year-old center fielder expressed relief after helping his team end its losing streak and compared his 1994 Eutaw Street longball to the exhibition shot that hit the Warehouse the previous season.

Said Griffey: "I hit this one harder."

I've yet to see a swing like that one.  From anyone, ever.  Griffey taking Pennington deep was something special.

Pennington also had a big ego for a pitcher that was a Mike Wright who could throw a little harder. Pennington mouthed to my friend one night in the bullpen before getting shellacked when he cam into the game.

He was a second round pick in 2012. Must’ve been a really weak draft. I hope he got a very good signing bonus.

Maybe Frobby Will tell us about the other second rounders from 2012, so we can element or be grateful for what Kline was able to do with the big team.

meanwhile, Valaika must be really special.

800k.  No idea what you mean by a weak class.  He went 65th.

The whole 2nd round that year has produced a total of 10 WAR to date.  With Alex Wood having 11 WAR.  So he has more than 100 percent of the WAR from that round.  Elias drafted Nolan Fontana at 61 who didn’t play in the big leagues last year and had -0.2 WAR on his career.

    • I always compare where we are in attendance to payroll. As it stands our attendance will be 19th in the league and payroll 22nd. The Twins are at 19th with 130 million dollar payroll which is 22 million higher than ours. I expect the Nats and Tigers to spend a little this offseason so that 130 million mark for 19th place may move closer to 140. Still gives this team 50-60 million to spend on either resigning guys or free agents.
    • Well, the changes to the flex plans this year led both me ($1200 plan) and my friend ($2500 plan) to not renew for next year. The decision to more severely limit playoff presale access and dramatically reduce the discount on food and drinks at the park just didn’t make it worth it to tie up that much money in advance. So, we’ll likely go to far fewer games next year. Given the press reports and online reaction, I have to think we weren’t alone in our decision making.
    • Rivera and Soto are hitting.   Holliday and Mayo are not.
    • Holliday could fill the role of pinch runner that Mateo would fill.
    • Yeah. I don’t get that either. SEA would win head to head tie with HOU and push HOU into WC race but it’s irrelevant if the loses don’t match.
    • Regardless of how down I've been about their recent play, there's always been some hope. Getting some guys back in time for the post season will definitely help.    The way this team has been built requires a group effort. I mean,  Gunnar is a huge star, but the lineup when healthy can be competitive top to bottom. I'm not knocking NY here, but if you can eliminate Judge(almost impossible), you stand a chance vs them. I'm not implying that they will go on a deep run because we've seen how bad it can be, but simply saying that getting healthy and having a shot is the best we as fans could have hoped for with the way this season has gone.
    • So who goes when Westburg and Urias come back?   My first cut is Jimenez.   The second is harder.    Liv Soto is the backup SS so I keep him.     Rivera is a good back up at 1B.   He is out of options.   Then there are  Holliday and Mayo.   Both have options. What's a GM to do?
