LOL dont worry you will ge these. It happens to us all.

Not all of us.

Just finished re-reading Where They Ain't, and it's weird how so many people from that era (and presumably the preceding million years) just got old and died when they were 50 or 60.  And these were baseball players, in better shape and probably better diets than an average person.  Willie Keeler died of congestive heart failure at 50.  John McGraw at 60.  Hughie Jennings was 59.  Joe Kelley made it all the way to 71.  Heinie Reitz died at 47.  Steve Brodie at 67.  Pitcher Bill Hawke died of cancer at 32.  Duke Esper at 43.

I think Boileryard Clarke and Bill Hoffer were the only NL Orioles still alive when the Browns moved in '54.  That's about the same distance in time as today is from the '66 Series.  There are a lot of '66 Orioles still alive.

Our old friend Carl Ripken would say you're underrating him. Sorry, Brooksie.

It's funny how Cal made a career out of never, ever saying anything the slightest bit controversial.  He slips up once out of thousands of interviews and we will never let him live it down.

It's pretty dumb.  Also dumb is the whole notion that saying someone was a better defender than Brooks Robinson is sacreligious.  Now it's dumb to think that but the fact that people get so uppity when someone ventures to make that claim is obnoxious.

Brook being the humble man he was, said that Manny was a better defender at third and could do things at third that he couldnt even dream of doing.

He might be right.  Who knows.

Manny arguably was as good or better than typical Brooks in 2013.     But Brooks was fabulous every year for a very long time.   There’s really no comparison defensively over the longer haul.     Though Manny’s arm is something to behold.

catching balls airborne in foul ground sidewalls and throwing a bullet to first while still airborne is super human feat.

I'd say shoe in is a bit strong.  He's only been above average the last couple of seasons.

5.8 rWAR and 6.2 fWAR in 2018 is not "only above average".

He had an off year last year, worse than even his age 19 season on a per game basis, but he is still better than 50/50 to make the Hall. Shoo-in is a bit strong since injury or tragedy can strike anyone, but if he even has a few more seasons like 2013-18, he will be well on his way.

Brooks has a very good case for being the best defensive third baseman ever.  And of course he's a stand up guy of the highest order.  But the idea that he was the best every single year for 16 years is almost certainly wrong, and an artifact of a flawed Gold Glove voting system.

    • I'll be honest, the playoffs didn't put me in a happy mood and reading this board has only made it worse.  The amount of people, many well respected, with over the top, outrageous takes calling guys "losers" and "chokers" etc. is ridiculous imo.  This reads more like a football board than a baseball board, and that's not a compliment. I'm kind of at a loss for what they should do to be honest.  The 2nd half drop-off imo is mostly explained by the injuries, particularly on the mound, and Adley's inexplicable performance.  If they were to run the team back with some minimal upgrades to the rotation and pen, sans Burnes and Santander, I think that's a team that could/should win 95ish games and compete for the division.  But there's downside there too.  And if you get Adley of the 2nd half, then you might be looking more at 85ish wins and missing the playoffs. However, I see a lot of schizophrenic and illogical takes on the board.  A lot of people are calling for a "veteran hitter" for the lineup; many of those same people are all too happy to let Santander walk.  Some are calling to not just "hand jobs to young guys;" many of these people were the loudest in demanding more aggressive promoting of prospects. I'm just generally down on the tenor of the board, and personally, I don't have any crazy strong feelings about what I think the O's should or should not do, which is fairly unusual for me.
    • The Phillies are profitable.  The Mets and the Padres are the only two teams that have really done aggressive “deficit-spending” in pursuit of a ring in the last few years.
    • If someone pays Burnes 400 mil or anything close. I think there are owners out there that haven't learned anything and have more money that brains. Don't get me wrong - Burnes is a good pitcher but that's it he is a good pitcher that will turn 30 next year. I believe the calculus for paying 30ish starting pitchers of value is changing. I believe - regardless of Boras - shorter terms and higher average annuals will be in play. So to me, 4/120 isn't a stupid prediction. Guess we shall see.
    • There is NOTHING preventing the Orioles of signing any player to a serious contract. Especially considering we have signed ZERO since Chris Davis way back in what 2015? That was almost a decade ago. We have been operating in a non-serious manner for too long when it comes to the org’s on field investment.  Teams that don’t spend don’t win World Series. Look at the last 20 years of the game. The Astros first World Series is the only team who wasn’t too half of the league who won a championship.
    • Some owners spend and want to win (Mets, Padres, Phillies). Some are more interested in making money (Rays, Guardians, etc). If Rubenstein is a profits based owner (has to make money year after year like JA) vs an investment style o lever (accepts some years May come with a loss or small net gain) then we (the fans) will be screwed. We will be akin to the Rays who are content with being “good”. But they are never willing to do what it takes to be good enough. I hope Rubenstein and everyone associated with the business or the Orioles paid a lot of attention to all of the empty seats for playoff games. That is evidence of a fanbase/market place who is not fully engaged.  The onus is on the Orioles to give people a compelling reason to come out and spend money especially in this economy. And it cannot just be hey look we have a winning team. The franchise must do more including investing in the on field product (in terms of committed dollars like every other serious franchise who is trying to win a championship).
    • My recollection is that MLB has rules about how much debt teams are allowed to take on and how much money owners are allowed to infuse into their franchises.   They supposedly won't approve contracts if they think a contract will cause them to exceed these thresholds.
    • Yeah like Tony T but Tony has the ability to foul pitches at will.  I want Cowser to be more like @waroriole’s Rob Refsnyder and Holliday to be Steven Kwan.  Is that too much to ask of number one picks?  But I love Cowser and most of everything he brings.
