Could Elias Keep Mountcastle Down All Year?

Friedman left without a ring.

I could see Elias leaving for a larger market when his contract is up if offers are out there.

Higher profile gig, more money, larger budget.  Why wouldn't he consider it?

First of all, the other team would have to get permission from the Orioles to even interview him.   It's something that typically doesn't happen.   You raid the front office for it's #2 and #3 guys and give them head jobs.

Did you see the part where I said when his contract is up?

I don't think it was ever officially said but I heard five years.

Even if moves wouldn’t necessarily materialize into MLB benefits by that time (e.g., improving the LatAm pipeline), that’s part of his resume for that potential next opportunity. It benefits to think beyond his theoretical tenure to a large degree.

I think it's more likely Elias is seeing whether MLB can get the covid situation under control.

No reason to call up Mountcastle and burn a year of service time for a season that gets cancelled.

Eh.  Next season it'll be another excuse.

Maybe Mountcastle's just not that good.

I think Mountcastle's service time issues are behind him.  The first 7 games, Sure.  But I don't see them keeping him down all of the 202 season.

In fact, I could see him called up for the doubleheader this week.  I asked the question "How long can Stewart keep Mountcastle down."   I think the answer is  "Its time."    Stewart can be optioned.

I’ve seen enough Stewart.

I heard he has not been impressive with the bat in the "intrasquad games" so not sure if that has anything to do with it as well.

Personally, I'd like to see him come up.

It's extremely unlikey that Elias is making this decision based on a couple of weeks of intrasquad games. Of all the possible reasons he isn't up, this isn't it.

I tend to agree with you. I've heard some others things too but rather not spread them them without conformation.

I suppose a lot of high draft picks miss and Mountcastle, Stewart, Sisco, Sedlock, Grenier weren’t single digits or anything. And they have no ties to current management so I can’t think why Mike would be reluctant to get rid of them if he didn’t think they had a future.

however, if Mike really wants 1-1 next year, it looks like he’s going to have to work for it.

Mountcastle not being up has very little if anything to do with service time.  They just don't think he's all that great and before they give him a chance they want to see what happens with Stewart, Nunez, Rios, etc.

Right....they want to see what Dwight Smith JR has to offer....

    • Gibson is being promoted to Aberdeen, per Melewski.
    • Is O’Hearn that much worse than Mountcastle at 1B?  I don’t think so.
    • I understand your case and logic for Skubal  . I do like him too . However I question whether the Tigers will trade him and secondly , is Elias willing pay the high costs to acquire him ?  Knowing Elias , I’m not sure 🤷‍♂️
    • But that’s my point, who are all these flawless options?  By no means do you have to trade for our guys, but it’s not a stellar group of starting pitchers.  You’ll likely take on some risk with whomever you acquire.  I don’t like taking specific comments and then generalizing the whole board, but there is quite a bit of nitpicking going on from a large group of posters on almost all the SP options not named Skubal as well as some overvaluing of your lesser prospects who are unlikely to get something of value.  Getting an impactful SP in this market is going to hurt one way or the other, you just have to decide what trade offs are you willing to take. I do appreciate your viewpoints because you seem capable of saying something might be fair in terms of value, but at the same time not be a trade you’d actually make.  Personally, I think Crochet would be a massive coup for you guys at the price I just mentioned, but I can respect if you feel he’s too risky.  I’m not sure there will another SP like him available in terms of potential impact and now is the time you guys should really be going for it.
    • Thinking of Povich today after practicing flute--trying some note sequences that sounded way off, compared to some that were harmonically pleasing. Sometimes the biggest help to learning is find out what doesn't work. In other words, I'm betting on a good outing next time out, whether it's vs. NY or someone else. It can help to get beat up by the pros once in a while.
    • Runs in the playoffs are generally at a premium, you want your best defenders in the game so you don't give away free runs. Mountcastle will be starting in the playoffs.
    • We’re trotting out A lineup out there and Mounty is hitting 7th and Cowser is on the bench. Both have really ugly numbers since May 1 basically.  We’re discussing game 3 SP, why not discuss do we want Mountcastle starting in the playoffs if it’s not against a LHP?  I’d say no.  As analytic and swing decision our FO is, I bet they want to get rid of Mounty. He was a necessary dude to get us here, but not anymore. Not with Mayo behind him. Mounty might benefit numbers wise, not approach, to get away from the Wall.  Would a contender want him?  If so, which one?  I don’t see why a rebuilding team would want him.  Could we buy and sell at the deadline?
