I don't think having the DH in the NL is going to move his value by an appreciable amount.

I disagree. Not as much as it'll move a guy like Mancini, but 1) Santander could be a DH and 2) Santander can play a good outfield and move some stiff player to DH.

Those NL teams will be looking for good bats. Santander fits that mold.

So this is interesting: I just read that JD Davis and the Mets exchanged the exact same salary figures as Santander and the O’s.

Davis (career): .268/.346/.448, 33 HR, 88 RBI in 863 PA, 0.4 rWAR, 2.3 fWAR

Santander (career): .252/.292/.467, 32 HR, 99 RBI in 709 PA, 2.5 rWAR, 1.4 fWAR

Davis (2020): .247/.371/.389, 6 HR 19 RBI in 229 PA, 0.1 rWAR, 0.5 fWAR

Santander (2020): .261/.315/.575, 11 HR, 32 RBI in 165 PA, 1.8 rWAR, 0.9 fWAR

If one wins and one loses, it could tell you a lot about how the arbitrators value defensive metrics and how they weight career numbers vs. the most recent season.   By all accounts, Davis is a pretty poor fielder whether at 3B or in LF.   Offensively, he’s arguably got a bit of an edge on Santander career-wise, but Santander was the better player in 2020 despite playing fewer games.

Should be noted that it’s a completely different panel of arbitrators hearing the two cases.

It depends on what else he brings to the table.  Average-ish defense, low OBP, mediocre speed and good but not great power isn’t a tough combo to find.

Contgratuations, you are the biggest Debbie Downer on the board of the worst team in baseball.....it's painful to read your comments.

Will admit I often find myself at odds with much of what you post, but this one is right on the money. If Santander was on another team, most of this forum would balk at offering anything of value for him in trade (or even pursuing at all). He is a Rule V success story and has offered some nice power production at a low cost - but he is not the type of player we should be keeping around at a higher cost.

You hating reading the truth?  Should I be blowing sunshine up your butt?

He has to be better than what he is.  What he is, is what I said.

So if he slugs just enough to not get to use Ryan Howard ever as a comp on the high side, and not to get non-tendered on the low side....

Maybe this is the difference between 4/32 and 4/38 before FA, rounding off to Arb1 baseline of $2M not $2.5M and guessing "about double" as what you get year to year if you stay about as good as you currently are.

In news that doesn't mean much, the Orioles won the Santander arbitration.  Heyman tweeted that this might make him more attractive to the Marlins.  Hopefully, this further cements the Orioles desire to not trade Santander as a "salary dump."

I’m mildly surprised, but good for the O’s, I guess.  JD Davis also lost his case with the Mets, at the exact same figures.    Owners are 2-0 so far, with 11 other arbitrations scheduled.
