The Orioles get more of the MASN revenue in good years but they also get more of the losses in bad years. I am guessing this was a bad year.

I don't think MASN ever loses money.

God knows they don't spend a lot on the product.

Per Forbes, in 2019, the Nats’ gross revenue exceeded the Orioles by about $115 mm.   In 2018 the gap was about $85 mm.  So that’s a big reason they are able to spend more.    Also, the Lerner family is much wealthier than the Angelos family, so it is easier for them to subsidize the team if they choose.  (To be clear, I’m not saying they have done so, only that they could.)

I am sure the 2020 revenue gap was much smaller, since the Nats’ gate receipts are generally much higher than the Orioles ($140 mm to $35 mm in 2019, $116 mm to $42 mm in 2018).    But they have a big slug of extra money from MASN coming to them once the appeals of the arbitration award are exhausted (which should happen very soon).
