Every time I feel Mullins is regressing to the mean a little bit, he gets hot again.   He’s really having a great season.

Statistically, at what point do you relocate the mean?Statistically, at what point do you relocate the mean?

Don’t forget that he ditched batting from the right side, so his career numbers are not the usual apples to apples comparison.  His career splits make me think that this season is more than just a hot streak as long as he continues to handle left handed pitching.

As a fan and someone who knows absolutely nothing about advance metrics, I would say a full season.

To go from being a switch hitter to batting strictly from one side makes things cloudy on what would be a new " normal" for him.

Impressed with Mullins' improvement with that bat.  After his blazing start, he cooled off and his OPS started to decline.  I figured he would end up .700-.750 OPS, which would still be positive w/ his Gold Glove caliber defense.  I just checked, he's back up to .924.  Now to see if anyone else in the outfield can stay healthy.

He's been on excellent surprise this season. Nobody is "untouchable", but he is the type of player they should build around.

I’m on the other side of the fence on this one. I feel like Mullins is a strike while the iron is hot trade candidate. I don’t think he can keep this up, and with the season he is having, he would bring a nice package in return. If you would have told me that at the beginning of the year I wouldn't have believed you. I do like Mullins though, so I wouldn’t be unhappy at all if we kept him.

Mullins hasn’t done anything to say he is a build around player yet but the changes he has made to his swing are paying off bug time.  We will see if he can keep this up but I would be surprised to see the Os deal him in July.

I tell ya Sports Guy, you continue to impress me with your ability to be wrong at every turn. Carry on!

He’s clearly a build around player. He’s the perfect lead off batter, he’s an incredible defender. Best of all, he stays healthy. You’re right though that the O’s will not deal him.

Was he a build around player prior to this season?

Did you think he was a build around player just last month when he slashed 255/336/306/732?

Would you build around a 26 y/o 730 OPS CFer with no prior ML history of being good?

So tired of fans that want to trade every good players the O's have.  I guess I want to cheer for a winning team, not a last place team that trades any good player.  Some fans on the hangout want to have an endless rebuild.  I feel like the O's with the talent that they have in the minors plus the talent in the majors can start trying to win next year.  Its time to stop trading core players.

    • For the same reason I mentioned. The biomechanical toll that pitching in the high 90's takes on the elbow. Whether it happens in AAA or early MLB... it has the same impact on the pool of talent. Slides it all up.
    • I never said it's becoming unglued. Reading is fundamental. I said if we don't make moves I could see things unraveling.
    • The issue is 3 of those issues were known before February, and weren’t addressed
    • I think the main reason for this is the number of ML players who have had serious injuries in the last two seasons.  Anyone close to major league ready has been called up.
    • You have to admit this is kind of nuts. These are the top pitching prospects in baseball. Our pitching is a mess right now.
    • FWIW... I don't see anything coming unglued at all. I am talking about strategic rather than tactical observations. (I suspect you weren't including me in the admonition, but I thought I'd clarify)
    • Ah... sorry... your bolded was buried in the hidden part of the quote window in my browser, so I missed it. And yeah, I would agree. There doesn't seem to be a monster surplus of promising AAA arms. I'd suggest maybe two reasons for this. 1) It serves to reinforce the idea of quality pitchers being harder to judge than quality position players. 2) It is somewhat indicative of the toll that bio-mechanics imposes on pitchers being coached into the high 90's That said, the smaller selection pool of pitchers should be somewhat offset by the larger pool of position players you've hoarded, if you've employed the strategy well. Making you the queen of the trade deadline dance.  I think our bigger problem has been holding on to our journeymen MLB players after they've had a good year, instead of trading them at peak (rather than a true lack of AAA or even AA arms). To be successful at this you have to have to courage to be a seller at the deadline even when you have a winning record and are a contender.
