Does Jean Carmona still have time to be a prospect?

Jean Carmona was the junior piece of the Schoop trade, acquired with Jonathan Villar and Luis Ortiz, who are no longer with our organization.    When we acquired him, Carmona was an 18-year old playing in the Pioneer League, which was equivalent to the Appalachian League, somewhere between the GCL and the NY-Penn League.    We didn’t have a team at that level, so we pushed him to (then short season A) Aberdeen in the NYP.   He wasn’t ready, and hit a miserable .226/.280/.301.    They tried it again in his age 19 season, with no improvement: .224/.290/.271.   Though he was still only 19, I think most people wrote him off.   

Fast forward past the lost 2020 season.  Carmona started 2021 in extended spring training, not a good sign.  But when Gunnar Henderson was promoted to (now Hi A) Aberdeen, Carmona took his slot at Delmarva.  

So far, the results have been decent: .306/.358/.367 in 14 games.   Not a lot of power, but at 21 he’s holding his own in low A as the second youngest player on the team (to Hernaiz).   

So, back to the thread title: is there still time for Jean Carmona to be a prospect?

It seems like this year is the year the Orioles clear out some of the inventory in the minors. There was a lot of guys that they just needed to see play, and some have been released like JC Encarnacion and Jaylen Ferguson. Carmona still has time, I guess, because he still has a jersey on his back. But I doubt he gets many chances from here. He needs to keep hitting and I hope his defense is on point, because there is a lot of young infielders coming in behind him.

He's still very weak with the bat and has a below average arm for SS which will limit his effectiveness outside of 2B. He hits a lot of ground balls and rarely barrels anything but he has been slashing hits around. He just looks like he hasn't really grown into his frame any or at least it hasn't shown much in his contact. 

He's only 21, but you would like to see a little more strength in the swing. He's a NP for more unless something drastically changes.

Funny, he’s hit four homers since you wrote this.   Still kind of a borderline case but it’s nice that he’s showing at least a little pop.  Slashing .266/.344/.431 as of now.  A .165 ISO for a middle infielder isn’t bad.

Only 21. I say he’s back on the radar. 

He had a nice game today, but he's struck out 23 times in 51 High-A PAs so far. He's still young enough to keep running out there and see if something clicks, but he's not going to be a priority play soon and if not for the injuries to Servideo and Ortiz, he probably wouldn't be starting now.

He’s shown a little pop this year with 7 HR in 224 PA, compared to 5 HR in 540 PA in previous seasons.   I think that makes him, as RZNJ said, a player of interest.   But I wouldn’t go further than that, with the contact issues he’s had.

      If he has been injured all this time, why are they still letting him play? After a month of poor performance with an injury, they should have sat him. EDIT - Screw a month, 2 weeks.

      And McCann is our worst RHB facing a dominant lefty with reverse splits. You have to think a K is a high likelihood.  And then to send him up there with Ramon on 3rd, you have to expect the same outcome.

      I don't like hearing that a catcher has a back issue -no matter how big or how small it is- at age 26.

      IMO he made two decisions that were clearly wrong, pitching to Witt and not PR Holliday, to go along with a couple others I didn’t agree with but are certainly debatable. There is no doubt that the game was lost because the bats couldn’t push a run across, but everyone has a job to do, and like the batters, Hyde didn’t do his.

      I use the StatCast search function. It’s a little more complicated for chase rate, ground ball rate, popup rate, and sweet spot rate because you need to adjust selected pitch attributes/outcomes as well as total pitch definition and then use % of pitches. I believe popups are categorized by stringers and generally capture balls that an infielder could catch.  I believe Adley’s fly balls have gotten can of cornier even without the popups.

      ...or simply choose not to even attempt to play situational baseball.  As I posted in another thread, 0-0 game both teams aces are dealing.  Ced leads off the inning with a double.  Your #9 hitter (McCann) is coming to the plate with your two best hitters (Gunnar and Westburg) to follow. Instead of bunting Ced to 3rd and almost assuring yourself a 1-0 lead which firmly puts the pressure on KC, Hyde chooses to let McCann swing away.  He feebly strikes out, Gunnar grounds out (there was your run), and Westburg flies out.  0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors. 1 left on....

      Adley - Is it an injury? Is it a woman? Is it the "process?" Is it just who he is at his age? What Is It? And no, I'm not doing a pole. Wait till 2025 for the answer - I think. Till then - speculate. This off season goin be fun on here. This thread kinda makes me miss Rick Dempsey and I have absolutely no idea why. 😄 Oh yea, he was our last WSMVP.
