OK, thanks, do we know why Watkins is starting instead of Wells, for instance? Even if they’re doing a multi pitching outing tonight, it makes sense I think, that a more established starter would be a wiser choice to start off.

And I’m not complaining, I’m just wondering why the guy with the absolute least MLB experience is starting instead of someone who actually projects to be a starter.

edit: I have learned that Wells was sent down, and Watkins was  a starter, So I should probably pay more attention to the minor-league rosters.So I should probably pay more attention to the minor-league rosters.

Huh?   Hasn't Watkins been in the Norfolk rotation all year?

Which Wells are you talking about?  Alex Wells was sent down the other day, so although he is a starter, he couldn't come up and pitch tonight.   Tyler Wells has pitched out of the bullpen all season.

Wells was optioned after his last appearance and just pitched in Norfolk on Sunday, so he’s not available.   And I think they optioned him at the time because they needed some immediately available arms.  (Plus, Wells didn’t exactly wow anybody in his two appearances even though he got a W.)

I did not know that Alexander Wells had been sent down, and I thought Watkins was a reliever. Thank you for correcting me on both counts

I liked what I saw of Watkins tonight, though I think his upside is limited.   His stuff wasn’t overwhelming, and he walked three guys, but overall his pitches were around the zone and in good spots.   He left very few pitches in the middle of the plate.   My general impression is he’s a Zimmermann-level pitcher.   He may run into trouble after hitters have seen him for a while.

I thought Zimm had a high ceiling and was expected to be above average or better?

Good for the young man to have a great night on his first start. The results were certainly as much as anyone could have hoped for. I don't think his stuff plays long term at the major league level, but he certainly earned himself another start. The good news on his 90 MPH fastball is that he gets pretty good spin in it for the velocity so plays up a bit. Still, he needs to have his command going for him for it all to work since there's not a lot of room for error.

      Santander does exactly ONE thing very well: Hit HRs He doesn't hit for average, he doesn't get on base, he's a very slow runner, and he is a very poor defender. If he stops hitting HRs so often, his value completely evaporates and his contract basically becomes dead money, and the Orioles cannot afford to eat large amounts of dead money like the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees of the world. I am simply using Trumbo, whose basic tool kit is very similar to Santander's, as a fairly recent, Orioles-related cautionary tale. Trumbo had his big walk year with the Orioles at age 30 and instead of doing the smart, obvious thing and taking the free draft pick, we gave him a big money extension that everyone except the FO knew was probably going to end poorly. Baseball Savant has Santander in the 22nd percentile in terms of overall fielding value. However you want to slice it, he isn't going to make up any lost value from declining offense with his defense. If his ability to slug goes south, the whole contract goes with it, because he has no other tools to make up for that with.

      Santander is -2 OAA this year. He’s averagish to below average. There but there are much worse defensive right fielders such as Adolis Garcia and Castellanos -9, Lane Thomas and Renfroe -8, and Soto -4. Acuna and Tatis are also -2 OAA.  In 2016, Mark Trumbo was -15 OAA. They’re not even in the same universe.

      Anthony Santander (age 27-29): .245 / .317 / .477 / .794    124 OPS+   9.0 rWAR Mark Trumbo (age 27-29): .244 / .299 / .443 / .742   105 OPS+  2.6 rWAR Is it really very meaningful that Trumbo was the better player when they were significantly younger? 29-year-old Santander is a better player by miles than Trumbo at the same age, and he has been for years. I think that’s what matters most to how you’d project them over the next few years.

      I love Tony and I honestly think we are gonna miss his veteran leadership as much as anything. I’m very happy we have him for this year. But I do think he’d be a bad long term investment.

      He’s the best player in history. No one can convince me otherwise.  I didn’t say he has the most records or the most counting stats or the most MVPs. That’s not what I said.  He’s just the best player in baseball history.

      Trumbo was a DH impersonating a fielder, Santander is just a very poor fielder. It's not a perfect comp (is there really even such a thing?) but he is an absolutely relevant comp for this team in this situation. He is the poster child for why taking the draft pick and moving on is the right choice. And Santander is still a bad fielder, just not quite Trumbo-tier.

      To this end I feel like we always had a pretty short leash with him. From the first three starts as an oriole to the yo-yo-ing this year. I would have preferred we just left him in the #5 starter role and see what happened. And maybe he’ll get that opportunity elsewhere like you said, whereas here it always seemed like his role was changing.
