Guys who get HBP a lot

I saw Jordan Westburg got plunked today and thought to myself that he seems to get hit quite frequently.   Sure enough, he’s been hit 13 times in 71 games.

Tony has mentioned how often Brett Cumberland gets hit.   He’s up to 26 plunkings in 59 games.

Adam Hall is another guy I’ve noticed has a history of taking one for the team.  In his case, 13 HBP in 61 games.

I hadn’t previously noticed, but looking it up, Hudson Haskins has been plunked 16 times in 67 games, Andrew Martinez 11 times in 57 games.

Overall, Delmarva leads our affiliates with 72 HBP, followed by Aberdeen 70, Norfolk 48, Bowie 45.   By comparison, our pitchers don’t hit opponents nearly as often: Delmarva 41, Aberdeen 35, Bowie 34 and Norfolk 22.   Cumberland by himself has been hit by more pitches than all the Tides’ opponents combined!

It makes me wonder if the O’s are teaching their hitters to crowd the plate and not get out of the way.  Delmarva and Aberdeen lead their respective leagues in this category and are considerably above league average.

Getting hit by the pitch is literally Cumberland's greatest skill at the plate besides popping a home run every once in awhile. He does crowd the plate and he does not move. He once got plunked 41 times in a season between two teams when he was in Atlanta's organization so this is not new.

Craig Biggio (285) is second on the All-time list behind some guy named Hughie Jennings (287), but I remember a guy named Ron Hunt, second baseman for the Expos, probably because I had his card.

Frank Robinson is number nine on the list.

Played for the Orioles.

I was watching an Oakland A's game earlier this year and Mark Canha was hit by a pitch to set the club record, I believe.  He trotted to first base and made the motion that he wanted the baseball.  I got a good chuckle out of that.

He’s a whiny jerk. Gets hit a lot and I’ve seen him have a reaction like it’s because the pitcher is throwing at him. He started barking at Suzuki one time who was defending Ohtani. Ohtani! Not only was it ridiculous because of the game situation, Ohtani is maybe the least likely guy to be throwing at anyone.
