Agree thats one strike against Green. We already have a crowded OF.  It would be nice to see a consensus ace pop into the picture.

It would depend on how many he gets back, but I'd hope so.

It’s interesting that, as clear a no. 1 as Harper was, he only ranks 4th in that draft in rWAR right now.   Sale, Machado and deGrom are all ahead of him by 5+ rWAR.    It still wouid not be surprising if Harper overtook them, especially the two pitchers, who are older.   So I don’t think anyone would complain that the Harper pick wasn’t a good one.   But I’m rooting for Manny to stay on top of him.  

 

Same! Still love Manny! Agreed, scouts aren’t always right, clearly. Just heard a friend in the scouting biz refer to Green as Harper-esque which means to me the scouting community loves his potential. But you are right, a lot can happen.

I also think, as another poster mentioned, if we are allowed to trade picks, Elias will def do that, no doubt about it lol. TBD with CBA.

And his OPS was only 1.116.  And he is only an elite runner, and he is only a plus plus arm, and he is only a plus plus power, and is only a plus defender and is only a plus hit.  

Watch him play a little and tell me you dont get a little excited about the possibility he could be an Oriole.

High school stats are pretty funky.   From the link in Big Mac’s post, Green has more runs than hits, how often do you see that, even with a guy who has a high OBP.   Also, he has ten stolen bases in zero attempts!    I guess they just say, “go ahead, take 2B, we know we can’t throw you out anyway!”   Finally, he has a fielding percentage of .875 (3 errors in 24 chances).   That’s uh, low for an outfielder.   

Bottom line, you’d have to see him play, as you said.

I agree, as a general matter HS stats are funky.  That being said as a general matter elite talent does not strike out a high rate in HS competition.  I'm sure all the tools are there, but I have a hard time believing the plus hit tool if you struggle to put the ball in play in HS.  It's a red flag for sure.

I do agree that a 34% K rate in high school seems like something you wouldn’t see in a consensus no. 1 pick.
