Grounds Crew Ejected?

Anyone know what happened here and why?

The umpire ambled across the field waving his arms like the old lost in space robot.  The grounds crew was stationed behind the tarp like they always are when rain is imminent. He told them to get lost, and they ran out the garage door in right field corner.  Then it started pouring.  Orioles pitchers were slipping on their landing foot.  Should have worked on the mound, but they couldn't.  

There needs to be public accountability for major league umpires.  That guy should be suspended.  It's not about wins and losses, it'd about the fact that when the grounds keeper stations her personnel in a ready position it's for a very good reason.

Umpire said it was a safety issue.  We all know its because it was the 9th inning and he was going to get that game done no matter what, safety be damned.

Must have had a reservation.

According to this article, the umpire's explanation is he didn't want them behind the tarp "because the infield was in". Not sure how the infield positioning matters but there you have it.

Just absolutely insane. Do umpires get penalized for anything? I guess not, Joe West is still umpiring.

Apparently the umpire was concerned that with the infield in, a foul pop up could be hit right to the tarp and the infielders wouldn't be able to get over there in time to catch it.

I think the ump would have had to submit to years of therapy if he had to umpire a game from 100+ years ago.

That's the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston, before Game 3 of the first World Series, played in 1903 between the Boston Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates. Fans were allowed to stand in a roped-off section of the outfield where the three-deep ring of fans is in the photo. (Balls hit into or over the standing fans were ground-rule doubles. There were three such doubles -- all by the Pirates. who won the game, 4-2.) Boston police aggressively cleared fans off the rest of the field before the game.

Yep, that's right.  I just find it funny that a modern ump loses his stuff over a few members of the grounds crew sitting behind the tarp, when it used to be common for fans to stand several rows deep all around the field during big games, even World Series games.
