In mid-September, according to sources, owners from the league's 30 teams agreed unanimously to a plan that would provide housing for minor league players.

I think this is the smarter way to go about it.  Hopefully they will be some balance between providing actual housing and providing stipends, maybe depending on marital status and seniority.

Mostly I see this as a boon for the International player who I think is the real victim in this story despite the more media savvy Americans getting the press.

Total no-brainer.

Hopefully this comes as actual housing owned by the teams in the minor league cities as opposed to a housing stipend provided to the players. Real estate is a fine investment for the team's investment portfolio and it is so difficult for the players to get anywhere near market rate trying to rent furnished apartments for less than 6 month terms (not to mention that they can be promoted, demoted or released at any time) that a housing stipend would be wildly inefficient. Teams know how many players will be at each level. Buy the real estate (or rent it for a full season's term) and allow the players to live there. When players change levels there will always be the correct amount of housing available. Don't make the players have to worry about it at all.

Except that some players will be married and have children and they might have reasons for preferring a stipend.

First off, decades overdue.  Why not do both?  The team can own or lease apartments for the players, but players can opt out and take a stipend to put towards a house if they have a family.

Sure, I agree.

I honestly think a barracks situation might work for the young single folks.

I lived in the enlisted barracks for years and it ranged from not bad to pretty darn nice.

I missed the details of this. I had thought it would be one solution across MLB. Is it instead up to each organization to come up with their own approach?

Wondering if in a city like Bowie you could have an arrangement between the ball club and Bowie State U. to take over 10-15 dorm rooms from April - October.   Of course there is some overlap between college terms and baseball seasons but it shouldn’t be that many dorm rooms unavailable to students.

This sounds like the most logical and fair way, though that probably means they won't do it!

My guess is they will let the teams handle it.

Would definitely make more sense to have broad parameters then allow teams to customize rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Just the differences between places like Norfolk and Delmarva, for example, could make the latter near impossible to manage.

I've sometimes wondered (90% goofy mode) if the relative proximity of Delmarva/Aberdeen/Bowie might ever mean the Orioles having an A-/A+/AA academy near the Bay Bridge could be productive.

Any Shorebird or Ironbird would be an hour plus between the ballpark and complex most days, but that's pregame planning and postgame swing decision reviews.   Willy Yahn could have the same bed all summer.

I always picture Matt Blood as like the dorm RA in this setup, but you could also have the mental skills folks, chef making Randy Arozarena's chicken and rice, pitchers sharing grips and training tips, etc, etc.

Norfolk would need the bullet train though.

      There was a game August 7th when he made questionable ph decisions. At that time, I believe pinch hitters were batting .370 with an OBP of .429 Now it’s .325 and .389 Any idea what the numbers are since August 7th?

      If you don’t think there’s a possibility of the Os missing the playoffs at this point I don’t know what to tell you.  Not saying it’s likely, and I’m sure not rooting for it (before some clown accuses me of that), but my eyes have to be open to that possibility. The team has played poorly over and over again right in front of us. The Tigers probably won’t lose more than 1 the rest of this week.  KC and the Twins have to start winning at some point - and we might have to beat the Twins ourselves, which how can you possibly be confident about that either? Those teams arent likely to just keep losing over and over.    We will probably be subjected to the Yanks celebrating their division title on Tuesday - if not then, certainly at some point this week, right in front of our guys. Perhaps that vision somehow lights a fire. I hope so.    Nice seeing Westie and Ramon back and glad they’ll get a full week before the playoffs start, if we do make it. There is some hope there at least. But things need to change on the field, and fast, or else all will have been for naught.

      As both an Orioles fan and Albert Suarez roto owner, I am frustrated he was allowed to pitch to the top of the order a 3rd time in the 6th inning. At the end of the top of the 5th, with Batter 20 Carpenter on deck as he retired Batter 19 Meadows for the final out, I mentioned to the friend I was there with it felt wrong no one was throwing because if Meadows got to Carpenter, a barrel was going somewhere.     Big Al got Meadows to close the 5th, and then on what was essentially Fan Appreciation Jordan Westburg Ramon Urias Good Vibes day, Urias starts and Westburg finishes a rally to turn a 3-0 deficit into a tie game. And three nanoseconds after the rally, Big Al, my unofficial 14th best out of 14 Orioles arms today at run prevention on a per batter basis, is deployed to try the Kerry Carpenter Challenge again with perhaps the most predictable HR outcome I have ever seen in person. SIGBOT could not have done better if it was trying to yield runs in that 6th inning, which it did.    The team's tactical decisions today make it fairly clear it is Late Season Sarasota.      Guys are getting their work in, the regular season competitions are over.
