3B Graffanino 1st inning error and an unearned run cost Rom 28 pitches to get through.    Could be a short night if he is still back in any kind of pitch count ramping up on return from injury.

Rom limited the damage to one unearned run in 3.2, but allowed 7 base runners and threw 85 pitches, only 50 for strikes.  His command definitely seems a bit off at this point.  Hopefully he sharpens up.

Drew Rom is going tonight for Bowie and I hope he can get straightened out.   To start the season, he threw 20.1 innings in 5 starts to a 3.98 ERA, allowing a .650 OPSA and striking out 25.   Then he went on the IL for three weeks, for reasons unknown.

Since returning, he’s thrown 17.2 innings over 5 starts to a 4.58 ERA, allowing an .830 OPSA and striking out 22.

He’s taken a step back from last year when he finished very strong at Bowie.  I’m hoping for a course correction starting tonight.

Rom's stuff has taken and step back and he just doesn't want to commit to throwing an effective changeup. He doesn't have the stuff or velocity to be a starter without a plus changeup.

Got what I was hoping for from Rom tonight, more or less.  5 shutout innings. 2 hits two walks 7 strikeouts.  ERA to 3.77.   That’s more like it.

Decent but not great outing for Rom tonight, 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K’s.  All three runs came on solo homers.  He’d only allowed 2 homers all season before tonight.  The best part is that Rom got through 6 innings on only 91 pitches, 62 for strikes.  I’ll take it as a positive outing despite the dingers.

Glass Half Full; among 54 Eastern League pitchers at 40+ IP ytd, only Joey Cantillo is younger than him and has a better K-BB%.

Among those 54, his .362 BABIP yielded is 4th worst.

Garrett Stallings and his delicious Hit Me strikes are 3rd worst, so it might not be all bad luck, but entering the year I certainly thought Rom had enough stuff to get by with.    Hoping he can pitch his way back to a forecast of maybe pitching more BAL innings than DL Hall across 2023-2029.

Anyone know why Rom is still listed for tonight even though he pitched last night? Did they swap him and Denoyer?

The O’s got tired of hearing about how they are babying their pitching prospects.  Let them start on consecutive nights like real men!

Rom threw 5.2 scoreless but then allowed a homer, a walk and two singles.  His reliever allowed another single that scored one of Rom’s runners so he ended up allowing 3 ER in 5.2 but I’d still call it a solid outing.   Just ran out of gas.

He hasn't taken a big leap forward this year, but I'd still count his year so far as adequate.  And I still believe he has a solid chance to be a future ML starter.

Meh. I'd say barely adequate, but maybe it's because of whatever put him on the IL for a few weeks.

The goal isn't to be a good AA starter. If that was the goal, I'd agree he's been adequate.

How are you defining solid?  I’d say his chances are 5% at best.

He probably hasn't pitched 50% of his yearly innings yet so we'll see where his year goes from here.

His ERA isn't shining, but it isn't terrible, and his peripherals are pretty strong.  11 k/9 rate belying much of the finesse pitcher label he's been tagged with.  HR under 1 per 9.  The major are he's really take a step back in is his control, which has never really been an issue before.  Maybe it's a matter of chasing Ks.  IDK.

We could debate what adequate means until the cows come home, but for me, he certainly hasn't pitched himself off of any prospect lists.

If you're going to put a number on it I probably think it's higher than your number but solid in this relative sense would still be a pretty low number.  I certainly don't think he has an above 50% chance of making it as a ML starter.

I guess, my point, is my evaluation of him hasn't been altered all that much this year.  He hasn't had a breakout season, but again, he hasn't imo "pitched himself off" of being considered a prospect.
