Jean Pinto 2022

In a piggyback outing, Pinto threw five innings and allowed 1 run on 3 hits and a walk, striking out 8.   The run came on a two-out homer in his final inning of work, and was followed by his one walk, before he secured the final out of the 8th inning.

In his last 7 outings he’s allowed 4 ER (5 R) in 29 innings, allowing 18 hits and striking out 32 while walking 9.

11 of his last 12 outings dating to late April have been good to excellent.  The one bad game was a real ERA-inflator, 7 ER in 3 IP.  But he’s having a better year than his overall 3.72 ERA suggests.

Seems to be pitching shorter innings like most folks in the minors, does it look like a future Akin type (multi-inning) reliever or 4th starter with his smaller build?

Hard to say for sure.  He’s a younger guy, and he didn’t pitch a full season last year (started out in the FCL in June), so they may just be conserving innings to get him to where they want him to be in September.   It will be interesting to see whether he gets a slightly longer leash in the second half of the season.

  • 1 month later...

Pinto goes tonight for Aberdeen.  He hasn't gotten a ton of love this year on the board but he's quietly putting together a pretty solid season.  Looking at his game log it seems he's thrown a few clunkers that have hurt his overall pitching line; however, he is still striking out batters a good clip @ 97ks in 82.2 IP after logging 84 in 66.2 last year.  His walk rate is up significantly this year averaging a BB every 2.22 ip this year compared to 3.88 last year which has increased his whip quite a bit.  I wonder if he has been working on new offerings leading to more walks.  He's pitched pretty darn good since 6/3 excluding one terrible outing against Asheville on on 7/29 where he gave up 7ER in 2.2 IP.  It looks like they have used him as a starter, piggyback guy, and a long reliever.  He has kept his BBs down and people off base the last month.  Hopefully he can continue that trend tonight against a pretty solid Hickory team.

He just hasn't been as dominant in A+ like he was last year.    The control issues have been surprising but maybe he was working on something.   It seemed like he had a complete pitch arsenal last year so not sure.

Command has definitely been an issue.   However, I’m pretty satisfied with his season, at age 21 pitching in Hi A.  He’s allowed 0 or 1 earned runs in 15 of his 22 appearances.  They’ve not let him throw more than 79 pitches all year, and never more than 5 IP, so they may see him more as a reliever than a starter.
