A utility guy who can play a plus defensive shortstop is very different than one who cannot play shortstop at all. They are entirely different roles.

Yeah. I'm saying one of those guys, probably Mateo IMO, fits in a Flaherty type of role whereas Vavra is more of a 4th OF plus sometimes 2B. His bat has value I think.

The Orioles have played Vavra in the outfield 6 times (5 in CF, 1 in LF for the first time ever professionally) and at 2B 4 times so far this season. So early on it appears they are certainly giving him a look as a 4th outfielder type who can play 2B if needed.

Vavra has really good at bats and sees a lot of pitches. He's a gap to gap guy, line drive guy who will occasionally pop a homer, but power is not going to be a big part of his game. One of the reasons he fell on my rankings a bit was my concerns that he's not a full-time player because he's not a plus fielder anywhere and doesn't bring much pop. The concern with high OBP guys without a lot of pop is when they reach the majors, pitchers will come right at them because they don't fear them. See Joey Rickard as a good example.

Defensively at 2B he's ok, but his limitations with a below average arm and he's not a quick turn at 2B in DPs. His hands and range are average at best so he's not going to kill you, but he's not going to bring plus value either. I haven't seen him enough in the outfield to have an informed opinion yet on him out there but the arm will be below average.

So what's his future role in the big leagues? Well, he's probably a pretty good PH option late in games because he'll have good PAs won't chase too many pitcher pitches. As a left-handed hitter, he's a better option on the bench than say McKenna because the guys you want to pinch hit for late in games against good righties are Mateo and Chirinos and maybe even Urias right now.

McKenna has a much better arm and can play all three outfield positions while Vavra is probably a CF/LF option. That's not a huge issue because both Hays and Santander can play RF and Mateo can go out there if needed.

Honestly, McKenna is not bringing much to the team right now besides pinch running and outfield defense late in games for Santander. If Vavra can show he can provide good defense in LF, they can move Hays to RF late in games if they want the good defense option. Vavra then provide a decent LH pinch hitting bat and can spell Hays against tough righties.

If the O's have Mullins, Hays, Santander and in May Stowers in the OF I don't see much playing time for Vavra in the OF.  It will take injuries to get him to the majors is my thinking.

Yes. Either that or we're getting to the part of the rebuild where we're trading guys away. Could (should) be an interesting deadline and offseason on the trade front.

You all are constructing the roster as if the Orioles are going to have 9 guys with 500+ plate attempts. The reality is teams usually have more like 4-6 of those guys, and then 12 guys (in total) who get 200+. Even if Hays and Urias are both 400 PA guys (ie Brett Gardener last year), that's still 300+ PA for another bat

Vavra was just taken out of game.  Injured himself rounding first.  Couldn’t quite tell what happened.

Good Lord you guys are quick. lol

Yeah, he was able to to take a few jogs down the 1st base line but by the time the game was back on he was taken out. Hopefully it's not too bad and it's not his back again.

Yeah, Vavra's only real option on the ML active roster is to replace Odor as the left-handed hitting 2B, or McKenna as the backup CF. I'm down for either of those options. That's an upgrade on either roster spot IMO.

It depends on if the Orioles view Urias as a back-up option to Mateo. If so, he can take Owings spot on the roster, too. I wouldn't mind a full swap of the Odor, Owings, McKenna and Gutierrez for Bannon, Jones, Martin and Vavra, but that's certainly not going to happen.

    • My advocating has nothing to do with it. The team signed him and obviously thinks highly enough of him. On top of that, you are wrong to not decribe him that way, especially from the first bad outing vs DC until July 1ish. He was dominant in that stretch and he was also very good to start the year.
    • Also, SG has been advocating for Kimbrel all season and won't give up now. I do question how long his periods of dominance have been this year.  I don't question that they have existed, just if I would use the word long to describe them.
    • I know this may come as a shock to you and most fans but teams don’t tend to get all panicky like you want them to. They don’t just give up on guys. Kimbrel is in a terrible slump and some fans want to DFA him but the Os know there is a dominant pitcher in there somewhere because he has shown that for long stretches this year. It’s far better to work these guys in lesser roles and see if they can snap out of it. Now, the Yankees aren’t doing that with Holmes but the struggles aren’t as abrupt and as bad as they were with Kimbrel but the Yankees know that they need Holmes to be good for them to win in Oct. The Orioles likely know that about Kimbrel too.
    • His 3.18 ERA ranks 19th among pitchers in MLB with at least 90 IP.  There’s only 32 pitchers in all of MLB that even currently qualify for an ERA title.  Suarez is a dude we take for granted, kick out the rotation, but might finish top 10 in CYA.
    • If anything I’d really like to see a return to that ultra patient plate approach they had a few weeks ago. Drive up these lefty starters pitch counts and get to the Mets bullpen.  Seems like they’ve strayed from that a little bit.
    • We have SP options in Povich, McDermott, and Young. It’s just that we’ve had to tap into them a little sooner than we probably wanted to because of the injuries.
    • Thanks for sharing.    It seems pretty much on par with most of the rerank mid season lists. Maybe not a complete overhaul. The good news is that Holliday, Wood, and Caminero, will graduate soon, so Basallo, and Mayo, would tick up 3 spots.  Basallo still has a month to go on a heater and take the #1 overall spot IMO.
