Why would you ever trade markakis to get smoak?

To get that kind of talent, you have to trade your top ML talent for it, or draft it. And it seems we are drafting projects and pitchers instead of more players like Smoak or Wieters. And to compete in the next 4-5 years without paying huge $ for FAs, we are going to need more Smoaks and Wieters type of players. Unfortunately with our first round pick next year, we will not have the opportunity to draft another top position player from what the draft boards look like and we'll select another pitcher.

Then why haven't we found one since Raffy left the first time?

Heyman gives numbers in this one. This is not an optimistic story if that's what you are looking for.

Given our situation...yes. By the time this team is ready to compete Guthrie will be past his prime. I could care less that it will cost us some wins while we rebuild.

He's basically trying to cover his ass while still making sure to make the O's look cheap.

Buster just re-regurgitated the same thing thats been said for the past two days. O's haven't increased initial offer, Tex would have to take a major hometown discount. Believes the Sox are going to get him when all is said and done. Also said Boras is the only one who really knows what offers are out there, etc.

Theres 1B, 2B, 3B and RF and a SP
