Change ups

Just wait until Grayson gets up here.  He’s got one of the best change ups I’ve seen.

And he’s lined up with Watkins, unless they’re doing something different in AAA. I haven’t been paying as much attention to how they’re resting him down there. I’d love to see him make the last start of the home stand, but I know it won’t happen.

Ben talked about the increase in change ups last night too. Changing speeds is always a good practice.

I like the overall strategy Holt is implementing: attack the zone and change speeds.  Make the hitter beat you.  Akin has been a master at this strategy so far.

Great strategy.  I dunno what the "best pitch" in baseball is but a big part of pitching is changing speeds and keeping pitchers off balance.  There are a few different ways to grip a changeup but here's hoping that our guys are having success with it and they're making it part of the new Orioles Way.

Holt's strategy is so complex only he, Will Hunting, and the guy from A Beautiful Mind fully undersand it.  Stephen Hawking was getting close before he passed away.

That is also interesting considering Zimmerman is now the only LHP in our rotation and changeup is typically associated more with LHPs.

Our biggest RHP innings guy is Lyles. He is an interesting case since he is coming to the O's. Last three years he threw the CH 6.7%, 9.4%, and 7.2%. This year he is throwing it a career high 15.7%, coming mostly at the expense of the curve.

Zimmermann is up from 26% to 31%.

In the bullpen, Tate's changeup rate is up from 15.8% to 30.5%.

Akin is not throwing any more changeups than previous years.

I heard that too, but the data they showed didn’t really show much of a change. It was a few percentage  points different and I think Ben said something like “big difference”. I really like how they are showing more data and discussing data during the broadcasts, but going from like 19% to 21% is almost certainly just noise and not indicative of a major shift in pitch use.
